About the Author
Born in 1970, Tom Cooper is a native of Vienna, Austria. His travels in Europe and the Middle East have enabled him to establish excellent contacts with many informed sources in Iran, whose experiences can be found in his books and articles. An early fascination with military aviation post-World War 2 has narrowed down to an interest in smaller air forces and conflicts, particularly the Arab and the Iranian air force and the Iraq-Iran war, about which his researches date from the late 1980s.

Excellent, rare work but leaves unanswered questions

This is a very rare book indeed, as books on the history of the Iraqi Airforce which covers developments in the 1980s and 1990s is as rare as hen's teeth. The book provides an excellent, if succinct history of the Iraqi Airforces history and the types it flew, with the sections dealing with the Iran and Iraq war and Desert Storm being of particular interest. The coverage of these conflicts is as good as you will see anywhere, but leaves a lot of questions unanswered, for example, in his book on the Iran-Iraq war co-author Tom Cooper describes Iranian kills of Iraqi aircraft which contradicts this work, yet there is no attempt at reconciliation of numbers or explanations. On Desert Storm, again the numbers of Iraqi losses contradicts US figures, in some cases US F-15 kills are challenged on the basis that a particular type was not in the area the kill was made, yet if you read the F-15 pilot's description (in other works) of the air combat in which the F-15 pilot describes seeing a Mirage F-1 and downing it, you come to the conclusion that one of the sides must be lying. Again, no attempt is made to reconcile the versions or to explain the discrepancies. The lack of footnotes detailing sources leaves one in doubt about the credibility of what the authors state. This failure is why I give this otherwise excellent work only 4 stars.
