What You Should Know About the United States Constitution and the Bill of Rights, by John Coleman

A book like no other ever written about the U. S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights. The information it gives is not found in law books nor is it taught at prestigious law schools. The reason? Very few lawyers ever read the Annals of Congress, the Congressional Globe and Congressional Record, and thus they miss the most crucial evidence supporting the Constitution. Some of the most priceless constitutional gems are found in these pages. Dr. Coleman has done 26 years of research to find them, putting together a highly-readable book which provides insight into the articles and amendments to the Constitution. It shows their true intent and purpose in sharp relief, and what it is that makes this document so great and lasting. Each page contains a wealth of new and often previously untold information, alive with admiration for the wisdom of the Founding Fathers and anger toward politicians who treat this valuable gift with carelessness and gross indifference.

Conscientious objector to Oklahoma babbler.
By A Customer
I, also, have read this book. I found many useful and worthwhile insights to the actual intent of the founding fathers in their formation of the constitution in this narrative. Many people in America today are trying very hard to forget that our founding fathers were Christians. It is this precept alone which alienates so many of their detractors. The Oklahoma babbler had no actual contention with the esteemed Dr. Coleman. His animosity must have stemmed from a disgust for all that our founders held holy, true, and redemptive. This book alone will not teach you how to spell 'waste', but it may just inspire you to look a little closer at the current laws being passed off as 'comely' in a country with it's roots deeply steeped in the word of God.

Fascinating!
By David Adams
This is a fascinating study on the literary structure of Freud's writing. HOW he presents his arguments rather than WHAT they were. How did he appeal to his audience? Why did he state his propositions with such certainty? What were the resources of his figurative language? Recall that Freud won the Goethe Prize for literature, not for his theories of psychoanalysis. Harold Bloom considers Freud to be one of the great poets of our age on the strength of his literary merit. This book is a must read for all students of Freud, and a lot of fun as well. Patrick J. Mahony is a practicing psychoanalyst as well as a professor of English literature at the University of Montreal.

Showtime: A History of the Broadway Musical Theater, by Larry Stempel

The definitive history of the Broadway musical: the shows, the stars, the movers, and the shakers.

Showtime brings the history of Broadway musicals to life in a narrative as engaging as the subject itself. Beginning with the scandalous Astor Place Opera House riot of 1849, Larry Stempel traces the growth of musicals from minstrel shows and burlesques, through the golden age of Show Boat and Oklahoma!, to such groundbreaking works as Company and Rent.

Stempel describes the Broadway stage with vivid accounts of the performers drawn to it, and detailed portraits of the creators who wrote the music, lyrics, and stories for its shows, both beloved and less well known. But Stempel travels outside the theater doors as well, to illuminate the wider world of musical theater as a living genre shaped by the forces of American history and culture. He reveals not only how musicals entertain their audiences but also how they serve as barometers of social concerns and bearers of cultural values.

Showtime is the culmination of decades of painstaking research on a genre whose forms have changed over the course of two centuries. In covering the expansive subject before him, Stempel combines original research―including a kaleidoscope of primary sources and archival holdings―with deft and insightful analysis. The result is nothing short of the most comprehensive, authoritative history of the Broadway musical yet published. 16 pages of four-color; 105 black-and-white illustrations

Review
“Starred Review. Not just a catalog or reference book, but a highly astute, integrative cultural history.” (Kirkus Reviews)

“Throughout, as Stempel traces the evolution with exhaustive archival research, he offers a penetrating and illuminating analysis of various musical forms and influences. Many of the 105 carefully selected black-and-white illustrations are surprising and revelatory. Theater buffs will be delighted to find that this scholarly, definitive work is also a hugely entertaining read.” (Publishers Weekly)

From the Back Cover
“Stempel has hit the trifecta: for academics, it’s a definitive work of scholarship; for students, it’s the perfect textbook; for ordinary lovers of musical theater, it’s a treat to savor at the end of a long day.”―Rose Rosengard Subotnik, Brown University

“Showtime is a sumptuous banquet of a book. This richly researched history allows us to be present at the birth of the musical theater and to be enthralled witnesses as it develops and metamorphoses into the wealth of forms we now enjoy. A century and a half of entertainment is a vast amount of ground to cover, but Stempel is the ideal tour guide. This is a book to treasure.”―Sheldon Harnick

“Showtime is a substantial work of American music history. Scrupulous but not fussy, learned but not pedantic, Stempel is a fine storyteller who delights in clarity and knows a good joke when he sees one. The precision of his thinking and writing gives the book an aura of authority keenly attuned to the tradition he critiques and celebrates.” ―Richard Crawford, author of America’s Musical Life: A History

“I cannot put Showtime down―and it’s a heavy book! Showtime is my new favorite companion.” ―John Mauceri, chancellor, University of North Carolina School of the Arts

“This is the book we have been waiting for―thoroughly readable and smart, informative and engaging.” ―Ted Chapin, president, Rodgers & Hammerstein Organization

“This is by far the best book ever written about Broadway, a magisterial critical history, which will be required reading for anyone interested in musical theater.” ―Kim H. Kowalke, Eastman School of Music

Simply the best history available
By Stephen
This is the most complete, most detailed, and most illuminating book on the history and development of musical theater, from its beginnings to the present day. It is perhaps more than some want to know about this art form, and yet if one is to really understand it, the amount of detail provided is extremely helpful. Another reviewer has pointed out that the author's personality does not come through, but this is clearly meant as a scholarly (in the best sense of the word) work, where personal opinion would be out of place. I love the opinion-laden books of Ethan Mordden, but am always aware that I am reading a very particular viewpoint. Here, I have the feeling that the author is trying to pull together all this is known about musical theater in the U.S., in a way that helps us make sense of the various streams of influence, as they have joined to create a form that itself has shifted and changed over the years. This is not a book I was able to read straight through--I found myself reading a chapter, and then putting down the book to think about what I had read. That's unusual for me. I like the way the book is organized, with 3-4 musicals per chapter used as examples--often in great detail. This heavy volume is clearly a labor of love, and I know of no other recent book that provides so much information on the subject.

This will be THE TEXTBOOK for Theater Majors for Years
By Gerard D. Launay
First let me explain what this book is not. It is not a loveletter to Broadway. Instead it is a deeply researched history on how the Broadway Musical Stage has evolved over 100 years...from humble beginnings in comic opera....to vaudeville...to the Golden Age of Musical Broadway...to Bob Fosse...to Disney Productions...and beyond. The major themes are the social or stylistic influences which caused new directions in the Broadway Show such as the introduction of ballet style dancing in the 1940's or jazz dancing in the 1950's and later. Important contributions in staging are not ignored either...like the baroque, opulent sets of "Phantom of the Opera" with its 100 candles recreating a haunted world beneath a belle epoque Opera House. The treatise is not so much about the lives of the movers and shakers as about why their influences "worked" in the time of history that the show went on.

I will discuss two examples: Carousel and Gypsy. In Carousel, the author explains that "while Oklahoma developed the moral argument for sending American boys overseas, Carousel offered consolation to those wives and mothers whose boys would only return in spirit." In writing about Gypsy, I learned that it broadened the dramatic scope of musical comedy and turned the conventions of that genre into "the stuff of drama." In other words, "Gypsy says something different and fairly hard to take: that every child eventually has to become responsible for his parents. That you outgrow your parents and then eventually they become your responsibility."

It is the kind of book to sip like a great wine...slowly and carefully to appreciate all the nuances and textures. I think it is a wonderful scholarly treatise that makes the Broadway Musical not only fun, but meaningful in American history.

Another angle of music theater history
By W. Smith
At this point, there are a few books covering the history of music theater. Some present it as dry statistics, some take a chronological approach, and some take a very editorialized chronological approach (American Musical Theater: A Chronicle comes immediately to mind). I think the only way to get a grasp on the progress of the musical is to read as many of these as possible and synthesize their thoughts. So, add to that pile this excellent book. It uses a conceptual angle. So there is a chapter on Off-Broadway, a chapter on concept musicals, a chapter on post-modern "antimusicals", etc. This is an effective, entertaining, and interesting way to go about it. The reason there are only four stars instead of five is that the book tends to leave out shows that were more obscure or had short runs. But, going back to the beginning of this review, Strike Up the Band: A New History of Musical Theatre and Off-Broadway Musicals Since 1919: From Greenwich Village Follies to the Toxic Avenger will cover the ground left over and give you a pretty decent comprehensive review.

From Publishers Weekly
For decades, coaches have sent athletes eager to improve their strength and performance straight to the gym to pump some iron. According to authors Marinovich and Heus, such advice couldn't be more wrong. "America's obsession with heavy weight lifting was actually training greatness out of athletes," they explain in this comprehensive guide to their conditioning and Zone-based nutrition plan, ProBodX. Unlike weightlifting, which can slow down athletes by burdening them with excessive muscles, and unlike yoga, which can needlessly over-stretch ligaments, ProBodX is supposed to improve flexibility, strength, endurance and mental stamina without provoking injuries. The key, according to Marinovich and Heus, is to engage the "nervous and musculoskeletical systems as a whole rather than as separate parts." Thus, their ProBodX exercises rely upon wobbly, free-floating equipment-such as gymnastics balls and balance disks-that force the body to use more than a few muscles at a time. Heus and Marinovich have the experience to know what they're talking about: he was once an Oakland Raiders offensive lineman and an NFL conditioning coach; she was a New York chiropractor who specialized in kinesiology. And their current roster of clients includes successful athletes like Chicago Bulls player Tyson Chandler and Olympian high-jumper Amy Acuff, both of whom appear in photographs throughout the book. Their exercises are amply illustrated with step-by-step b&w photographs. Despite the careful instructions, neophytes may still feel like they'd need a trainer to walk them through such exercises as the "Scissors," which involves twisting a knee to the ceiling while balancing a one's stomach on a giant gymnastics ball. But those who have the time and energy to learn a whole new way of exercising should find this volume well worth a try.

just like a car you buy or lets say in fitness
By Rob
Ok, I have read the book a few times. First cover to cover and then again without the Fwd as complained about here, then again with an open mind about the over use of "ProBodX in the text....
They are selling I say again SELLING a book and a system, just like a car you buy or lets say in fitness....SUPPLEMENTS that I am positive many of or all of the 1 star reviews here spend on. Im not here to bash a review or anything but if you want magic potions you should look into the magic pills for instant abs and a feel good pill with your "health care" provider. I don't remember the last time something was just BAM instant. As for the equipment, Planet Fitness 10 bucks a month and its garbage, Golds Gym 25-50 a month, some as high as 100 a month. Lets average about 50 a month that's 500 a year, not to mention the elliptical and Nordic track you have in the basement at 2k each....Just saying most people are well over 200 ish if you out right buy the stuff online.

That being said I made the equipment as listed here and it was outrageously expensive:
what do you need?
some plywood (free - 20 bucks)
4 inch pvc pipe (free- 6 bucks)
anti slip stuff ( be creative - 5 bucks)
duct tape ( prob already have it)
water bottles ( drink water to live..they can be empty)\

I used my dual bevel miter saw (500$) to cut my plywood(free) into 16x16 inch squares then used my clamps(50$) to hold them together. I took my wife's plate from the kitchen(plate set 250$ I used a good one) to draw a circle and used my jigsaw(200$) to cut them to circles. I used scrap 2x2x4 inch scrap to make the unstable surface and rounded it a bit with a belt sander (200$) then took my drill(250$) and some screws and attached the wobble part to the bottom.

WOW Ive already spent nothing on materials but thousands on tools.
If you cant see the sarcasm ill dumb it down. All this stuff can be made for FREE and some hand tools someone you know has. The hand weights can be made and filled with water or sand, the polls use broom sticks, the slant board...don't make me list it like I did the wobble disks.

As for the workout, read into the Marinovich history or Nick Curson and the people they have trained and the success they have had. Read into Sergei Bubka and the plyo/balance work one of the most explosive athletes in history did to hold world records for 20 years. Look at what the top athletes do and you may start to understand the science behind this. Those of you that say they are elite...low impact is VERY good for long term health and fitness.

BE OPEN MINDED AND TRY.

A great method you won't find anywhere else
By Joshua Leeger
I've gone through this program several times and always benefited. Now I'm recovering from ACL surgery and will go through this program again. This type of work and the approach are incredibly important and I haven't seen them replicated anywhere else. Thanks go to Edythe Heuss and Marv Marinovich for producing this method.

A great unorthodox way to achieve sport specific fitness.
By Einstein
I chose this rating as I have a background in fitness science and the exercises in this book are unorthodoxed in movement which I highly believe in for proper body fitness and sport specific exercises. The belief in heavy weight strength training is over rated and makes the pro athlete stronger, but more slower and accessable to injuries in power and force that is generated were with probodx the athlete gets unstable training which provides strength and flexability in all there muscle groups instead of just certain mscles being trained. I highly recommend this book for any person training to one day preparing to become a professional athlete,no matter what you maybe traiing for.

How To Have Magnificent Sex: The Seven Dimensions of a Vital Sexual Connection, by Lana L. Holstein MD

How to Have Magnificent Sex is written by a family physician turned sex therapist and wellness specialist at the world's premier health resorts, with the goal of helping couples expand their understanding and realize the untapped potential of their sexual connection. Dr. Holstein shows how her original conception of the Seven Dimensions of Sexuality (biologic, sensual, desire, heart, intimacy, aesthetic, and transpersonal) can be harnessed by committed couples to transform their relationship from mundane to magnificent, from vague to vital. She is able to build a bridge between the scientific, medically-documented aspects of our sexual function to the spiritual and awareness-based practices of Eastern traditions such as Tantra, in a way that is accessible to all readers. The book is illustrated throughout with case histories from her practice.

Amazon.com Review
How to Have Magnificent Sex is designed to put the tiger back in the tank for the 43 percent of women and 31 percent of men who have sexual problems. Lana Holstein, a Yale-educated physician who is medical director of women's health at Canyon Ranch Health Resort, believes a healthy sex life is a "birthright" and presents a plan for eroticizing encounters gone bland. Using anecdotes from her 25-year medical practice (patients are referred to by first name only, of course), Holstein illustrates seven principles that she says make or break sexual euphoria, theorizing that all must work in harmony for the most tantalizing results.

Lest you think "ecstatic sex" comes naturally, Holstein likens erotic encounters to tennis, suggesting that practice, and lots of it, makes perfect. By experimenting with all seven dimensions--understanding the body, exploring the senses, recharging desire, opening the heart, boosting intimacy, baring the soul, and embracing the spirit--Holstein says couples can achieve a more perfect union, and she coaxes lovers along with techniques to try at the end of each chapter (for example, to heighten your sensual dimension, go dancing and try other means of nonsexual contact; to become more soulful, create a love room filled with candles, incense, music, and colors). And for more advanced students, there's even a section on tantra, the path to enlightenment via sexual practice made famous by popular singer Sting.

Entertaining as the book is to read (one of Holstein's workshop attendees exclaims, "I'll never be too tired again!"), the real fun for the reader starts, of course, when you shut the cover and head under the covers. --Deborah Geigis Berry

Review

-- Susan Rako, M.D., author of The Hormone of Desire: The Truth About Testosterone, Sexuality, and Menopause

"If you find that sex has become routine or that it's the one thing on your 'to do' list that is the easiest to ignore, then you have to read Dr. Lana Holstein's smart, sexy, thoroughly honest book. A Yale-educated M.D. and the Director of Women's Health at Canyon Ranch, Dr. Holstein has helped thousands of women and men revitalize their sexual relationships and rediscover the passion that is so much a part of love."
-- Olivia St. Claire, author of Unleashing the Sex Goddess in Every Woman

Whole-Person Sexuality!
By A Customer
Dr. Holstein's book is exceptional in the breadth of its approach to human sexuality. The seven dimensions she identifies for sexual experience are in fact the seven levels on which all human experience takes place, from the basic biology of our organic existence to our relationship to God. Her ability to show how our sexual energy partakes of all these domains of experience, and not just the ones we have been conditioned to think of as sexual by the imagery of today's media and institutions, is original and profound, as well as being useful in a very practical way. Bravo!

==============================================

This is Somerset Maugham's last short story collection: published 32 years after his first masterpiece, ''Of Human Bondage'' (1915), and one year before his last work of fiction, ''Catalina'' (1948). In the preface to the First American edition of his ''Complete Short Stories'' (1952) Maugham said flatly that he had written his last short story. As always, he was as good as his word. In 1933 he said farewell to the stage and never wrote another play; in 1948 he announced his retirement from writing fiction and to the rest of his life he wrote only essays. Considering the level of excellence of Maugham's last works of fiction, I cannot but feel sorry that in the last 15 years or so from his career as a writer he did not write a single short story, let alone a novel. But then I reflect that Maugham was everything but stupid; he surely was a man who knew his own mind pretty well. If he had few illusions about his fellows, he had none about himself. He must have sensed that his creative powers were failing in the late 1940s, although I still can't sense that at all, to make such a grave decision. It is very much to his credit that he had the resolution to stop when he still was, to my mind completely, at the height of his creative powers.

I am often amazed not just by Maugham's longevity and productivity as a writer, but much more by his maintaining extraordinary high quality in his writing for more than quarter of a century. Speaking of short stories, ''Creatures of Circumstance'' was Maugham's eight short story collection published exactly 26 years after his first masterpiece in the genre, ''Trembling of a Leaf'' (1921). These eight volumes contain exactly 84 short stories written during quarter of a century or so; not even one of them is unreadable or tedious; the worst of them can be counted on the fingers of two hands and even they are not unpleasant to read. The great majority of Maugham's short stories I have never hesitated to describe as brilliant masterpieces; their superb character and plot development as well as their eminent readability, and especially the combination of all these factors, can occasionally be equalled by others but it is simply impossible to be surpassed. Of course the fifteen stories in ''Creatures of Circumstance'' are totally different in character than the ones written 20 years or so earlier but they are hardly weaker in any aspect. Now, I really do find this amazing.

''Creatures of Circumstance'' starts with a compelling preface which bears the charming title ''The Author Excuses Himself''. Maugham explains first that in the preface to his previous volume of short stories, The Mixture as Before (1940), he had written the line 'I shall not write many more [stories]' but the editor, thinking perhaps that Maugham had already written quite enough stories, dropped the 'm' and the line became 'I shall not write any more [stories]'. So he had had the intention of publishing another volume right back in 1940 and did not wish to mislead his readers deliberately by such a statement. He then mentions that some of the stories were written a long time ago but he preferred to leave them unchanged (somewhat misleading statement as we shall see presently) and that the rest were new. This is not quite true either since some of the stories (''Appearance and Reality'' and ''A Casual Affair'', for instance) were published in magazines as early as 1934 and Sanatorium appeared on the pages of ''Cosmopolitan'' in the end of 1938. Anyway, that is neither here nor there. Infinitely more important is the fact that there is a lot to enjoy here. The diversity of styles, settings and locations is that I at least find very much appealing.

Surprisingly, since in 1936 for the preface of ''Ah King'' in The Collected Edition Maugham said he had written his last so called ''exotic'' stories, ''Creatures of Circumstance'' contains one such story. ''Flotsam and Jetsam'' is a rather harrowing tale but compelling nonetheless. It reminds of Maugham's finest achievements about planters in the Far East who are slaves of their darkest and most sinister passions. Less violent but hardly less memorable passions are the protagonists also in two other short stories - the exquisite ''A Woman of Fifty'' and the heart-rending ''A Casual Affair'' in which, among other things, Maugham enjoys satirizing the upper classes of long passed times.

But Maugham's versatility is really something to marvel at. Along the aforementioned grim and lurid tales, there are a number of extremely amusing stories that can always make you laugh a good deal. The French or the English marital complications in ''Appearance and Reality'' and ''The Colonel's Lady'', respectively, or the unforgettable Miss Reid in ''Winter Cruise'' are a perfect way to relax. It should be mentioned that ''Winter Cruise'' is also a perfect example how Maugham could write amusing and enjoyable thing to read using the stupidest and most banal plot in the world.

The three ''Spanish'' stories certainly are worth mentioning too. ''The Romantic Young Lady'' is rather funny and ''The Point of Honour'', showing some quite perverse sides of Spain and the Spaniards, is rather serious and disturbing but both are absorbing. And ''The Mother'', quite lurid and shocking, is one of the very few examples when Maugham, who detested his early works, was more or less completely satisfied with something he had written almost 40 years ago. ''The Mother'' was first published in ''Storyteller Magazine'' in April 1909. This early version appeared in book form not earlier than 1958 in ''The Cassell Miscellany''. Maugham did revise the story for its inclusion in ''Creatures of Circumstance'' but only slightly; on the whole he seemed content to leave it as it was which is somewhat contradictory to what he says in his preface but, on the other hand, he might have meant some of the stories that were published in magazines in the 1930s, a decade or so before, and not ''The Mother''. It is interesting to note that Jonh Whitehead, in the preface to the priceless ''A Traveller In Romance, Uncollected Writings of W. Somerset Maugham, 1901-1964'' (1984), mentions something about an early version of ''The Point of Honour'' too but I have so far not been able to find anything whatsoever that such version was ever published or existed at all; oddly, John Whitehead hints that Maugham rewrote the piece later and that his claim in the preface of ''Creatures of Circumstance'' is inaccurate but he did not choose to reprint this putative early version of ''The Point of Honour'' although it does seem to fit his criteria.

The case with ''The Happy Couple'' is quite different however. The two versions of this short story are quite different indeed and they provide the real Maugham admirer with a fascinating opportunity to see how the great writer developed his style through the years. The early version was first published in ''Cassell's Magazine'' in May 1908 and the later one in Redbook in February 1943 - they are separated by 35 years. It is worth while seeing how Maugham managed to improve significantly so early a story of his which, even in its 1908 version, is by no means bad. First he changed the narrative from third to first person singular. Maugham wrote a great deal about the art of fiction and the writing from first person. He often used the method to a great effect, invariably telling the story from a standpoint of an observer, never through the eyes of the protagonist. This is a very effective way to win the reader's confidence and make him live the whole story together with the author. That is exactly what Maugham achieved in the later version of ''The Happy Couple'' too. Moreover, he introduced a new character, the judge Landon, who is completely missing in the early version, so the story gained one point of view more. When you add to all this the greatly superior writing style that Maugham had in the early 1940s in comparison with the somewhat crude one in 1900s, it is hardly surprising that the rewritten version of ''The Happy Couple'' was the one included in ''Creatures of Circumstance''.

''A Man from Glasgow'' and ''Sanatorium'' deserved to be mentioned simply because the latter is one of the greatest short stories Maugham ever wrote and the former is one of the worst. ''A Man from Glasgow'' certainly is the worst from all 15 stories in ''Creatures of Circumstance''. It is one of Maugham's stories about mysterious phenomena, something of a ghost story actually, but rather unsuccessful and far from his brilliant earlier treatments of similar subjects like ''Honolulu'' (1921), ''P. & O.'' (1926) and ''Lord Mountdrago'' (1940). As for ''Sanatorium'', it is the only short story that includes the charming spy and gentlemen Ashenden, except of course all stories in ''Ashenden, or the British Agent'' (1928). ''Sanatorium'', however, is the only one written separately and as a short story by design, quite unlike Ashenden which consists of 16 chapters that were later merged into 6 short stories. ''Sanatorium'' was actually based on Maugham's own experience while he was recovering from tuberculosis in a sanatorium in Scotland during the First World War. The story is brilliantly executed and extremely poignant.

The last three stories that close the book, and Maugham's career as a short story writer, are as perfect as it is possible in so imperfect a world.

''The Unconquered'' was first published in a magazine in 1943 and it is the only short story of Maugham set in France during the Second World War. It is a haunting drama about a German soldier who raped a French girl and the multiple, and quite unexpected, consequences of that. It also contains one of the most unexpected and horrifying finales of all Maugham's stories.

''The Kite'' and ''Episode'' are the only two short stories of all Maugham wrote in which the prison confidant Ned Preston appears. He is more or less the only thing they have in common. ''The Kite'' has a highly original plot but very convincingly done, unbelievable as it may seem at first glance. It is rather amusing to read but it is by no means superficial. Together with the facetious satire of the middle class prejudices, Maugham gives a great deal more about human nature with his usual acumen. ''Episode'' is a story about love and passion between two young things. It has one of the most unexpected and one of the most chilling ends I have ever read. Every time when I read the story, and I have read it at least five times, I gasp after the final sentence. Maugham's sixth sense for dramatic effect never failed him and I do not believe that there are many authors who can compel you so strongly to read them and to shock you so profoundly with a last sentence of exactly three words.

Even Maugham apologized for this pitifully poor collection
By John Fitzpatrick
Somerset Maugham recognized later in life that some of his work was so bad that he refused to allow it to be reissued.

He should have done the same with this abysmal collection of short stories, first published in 1947 when he was a long-established successful author, and hoped they would never see the light of day again.

He makes an insincere meu culpa in a short preface - "I owe my readers an apology for the publication of this volume" - but then tries to justify this kind of short story written for magazines that were popular in the early 20th century.

The titles alone are enough to warn the reader off - "The Romantic Young Lady", "Appearance and Reality", "Episode", "A Woman of Fifty" etc.

There are occasional bits of humor and the kind of acerbic approach we associate with Maugham e.g. the young German sailor who is ordered to make love to a frustrated middle aged Englishwoman or the French Senator who sets up his young mistress in an apartment and then allows her to marry her true love so he can then enjoy the thrill of having an "affair" with a married woman.

However, most of them are preposterous and trite with limp "so what" endings.
