About the Author
Iain Zaczek is a writer with a background in art history. Born in Dundee and educated at Wadham College, Oxford, and the Courtauld Institute of Art, he has extensively researched and written about Celtic legend and culture. His work includes: The Book of Scottish Names (Cico Books); Chronicles of the Celts; The Book of Kells (Collins & Brown); Irish Legends (Contemporary Books); Celtic Art and Design (Studio Editions); and The Clans and Tartans of Scotland (Lorenz Books). Charles Phillips is an established writer of popular history and was a contributor to Cassell's Dictionary of Modern Britain and Ancient Civilizations; and illustrated histories published by Dorling Kindersley, Guinness and Marshall Editions. He has a keen interest in British history and the story of the Royal Family and was a key writer of Time Life's Myth and Mankind series, which blends mythology with the art and history of ancient cultures. Charles is a graduate of Oxford University and holds an MA from the University of Westminster, London.

Fascinating look at a narrow subject

I bought this as a gift for my nephew who is extremely focused on period clothing and loves plaid. It's nicely laid out with a good balance of photography and explanations of the histories of the different clans who wear the different plaids. It would be a good addition to a sewist's or weaver's library, especially if they are history buffs. Historians will enjoy it because it's so much more than about the fabric.

If you want an overview of the history of tartans and well-reproduced examples of the major ones (and many obscure ones you might not realize exist), this is your book. It is an easy read, a beautiful book, a great reference.

Not as complete as advertised

Though thorough in an overview of the Tartan, many family and clan Tartans listed in the Scottish registry are not included. Going to the website for the country of Scotland is much more complete. Interesting reading and such in it's own way, rather disappointing for what is written in the description.
