Peter Ling

Dr Peter Ling is with the School of Media and Communication, RMIT University. He has been Deputy Dean since 2011 responsible for discipline clusters and recently the international portfolio. Before he entered academia with Edith Cowan University, he had worked in team creativity consulting, advertising agency management, marketing communication consultancy, public relations and journalism. He has worked in Singapore, Taipei, Perth and Melbourne, including training attachments with Young & Rubicam Advertising in New York and Lintas Advertising in Sydney. He has written hundreds of industry articles and cases for various publishers and is the lead author of Consumer Behaviour in Action (OUP).

I don't have the eloquence and patience to write everything that I would like to about the Kilo-Five trilogy so I'll be brief. Would I recommend this series to other Halo fans of my caliber. Yes. It has been declared canon and whether we like it or not, that's the way it is. However, I feel Karen Traviss (you cannot comprehend the amount of loathing that drips from that name every time it passes my lips) has single handedly destroyed the story line of every character associated with her books. As I'm sure you've read from the other reviews, the character assassination of one of my most beloved characters, Dr. Halsey, is constant to the point of being obsessive. Instead of making you ask yourself "Is Halsey really this bad?" You find yourself asking, "Wow. What kind of Mommy issues must this author be dealing with. It was like she had been handed a skeletal dossier on a few characters and the storyline and told, "Here. Do whatever you want." Her military jargon is lacking to the point of laughability and throughout most of this trilogy, I had to keep reminding myself that I was reading a Halo novel. The endless stretches of dialogue and self-righteous ramblings are punctuated very infrequently by lack luster and lacking actions scenes. You can almost picture Karen Traviss (again, Venom) hunched over her writing desk, forcing herself to write these scenes, all the while muttering "F*cking fanboys..." before she straightens her back, looks down her nose, and launches back in to another tirade about ethics and morality, all seasoned with a healthy dose of Nazi comparisons. If she had bothered to read Eric Nylund's books at all (and from her story line it is CLEAR she did not) she would have seen what it was supposed to be. And I could care less about other writers styles, or artistic differences. What we LOVED about the other Halo novels was that it took our favorite video game and took it into the world of literary, MILITARY science fiction. And as a huge fan of military science fiction I can tell you, that across the myriad of series that I have read, I have never been more let down, disappointed, and infuriated by where an author took the story. So thank you Karen Traviss. Thank you for taking something that I have loved every part of and have since it's inception and grafting on your atrocious abortion. I wouldn't even use your books to press flowers.

Terrible. Karen is the Uwe Boll of novels.

Wow... and here I thought Karen Traviss couldn't get any worse. Holy hell did she prove me wrong.

To be brief... Karen continues to fail by mistaking character development for repetition. This book has the same problem as the first two... only worse. Meaning, Karen keeps cramming in the same character realizations OVER AND OVER AND OVER again. How many times will Vaz stop and curse Halsey. How many times will we see Osman ride the training wheels of "CINCONI in training". HOW MANY TIMES are we going to see BB yack about his damaged fragment + being human + the same garbage over and over. HOW MANY TIMES are we going to see each character waste 50 pages on "it was then after I reacted like *insert here*, that I knew Kilo-5 was family. I have to protect them... blah blah bliddy". Karen spends so much time visiting the same points, barely any actual story progression is made at all.

The ending felt way too rushed after wasting the rest of the book on exposition, rehash, etc...After 3 books, the only interesting new potential plot lines that were revealed were; Sinks and his potential rampancy, Chol Von ( but this is a moot path since humanity can destroy the kig-yar), annnnnnnnndddddddd thats it. Nothing else happened in this book. The defusing of Steffan was a TERRIBLE mistake. He could paved the way for a much more interesting storyline in later books/games. I personally would have loved to play a halo game, or read a book, where the insurrection rises again.

A Note to 343i... this is why the last book in the Forerunner Saga, and the Halo 4 story SSSUCKED. Please don't shape anymore content around the Kilo 5 trilogy: IT SSSSUCKS. And please show Karen the door. We need Eric Nylund, and Tessa Klum.

Still the only good thing in the Halo Universe she has written was "Human Weakness".

Neither grounded nor eloquent

The final entry in the "I hate Catherine Halsey" series is a feel-good story with a stereotypical ending that can be seen from a mile away. The entire cast has the exact same moral compass, and never make it off of their high horses for long enough to see that their self-righteous approach to their mission directly conflicts the lack of human decency they display elsewhere. It's a story about ONI agents completely ignoring their basic job description.

Every other page is punctuated by some sort of monologue about how everything is Dr Halsey's fault, despite the fact that Halsey plays no part in the story at any point in this book.

Banter between characters remains cheesy as always. Some of the more interesting characters get only minor focus, and in some cases no closure whatsoever. Fortunately this book focuses almost explicitly on Traviss' own characters. The stories of other characters like
Halsey and 'Mdama are picked up in places like Halo Spartan Ops (now viewable in Waypoint) rather than in this book. This having been considered, I'd only recommend this book to Halo fans who really want to hear every story from the Halo extended universe.

essential book for anyone studying economics/public policy

I found this book by accident! And it saved my (academic) life, by giving me a clear, economics-grounded understanding of: -why markets fail -why governments fail too -what the alternatives are for correcting those failures (policy options) -how to do a cost/benefit analysis of the different policy options -how to structure a policy analysis -how to write it up and present it in a way that makes things happen.
Whether you work for an advocacy organization, a politician, a government agency, a corporation, or are simply interested in better understanding why governments intervene in the 'free market', this book will be a great help to you, too!

The best book available on policy analysis

This is the 5th edition of the authors' classic text on policy analysis. It is a challenging textbook and it helps to have some knowledge of microeconomics when working through a few of the early chapters. But it deftly combines the economic analysis of policy with time-tested guidelines on the more general practice of policy analysis. I use it every year in the policy analysis course I teach and the students always give it excellent reviews.

Weimer's "Policy Analysis -3rd edition" provides a well-organized, widely-covered, and easily-understandable introduction to policy analysis. Although we have to seek for other materials for an in-depth analysis of some topics, the book helps us start with Public Policy, Policy Analysis, and even economic policies. This is especially good for undergraduate level, since this provides how to study, investigate, and write policy paper.

Iain Zaczek is a writer with a background in art history. Born in Dundee and educated at Wadham College, Oxford, and the Courtauld Institute of Art, he has extensively researched and written about Celtic legend and culture. His work includes: The Book of Scottish Names (Cico Books); Chronicles of the Celts; The Book of Kells (Collins & Brown); Irish Legends (Contemporary Books); Celtic Art and Design (Studio Editions); and The Clans and Tartans of Scotland (Lorenz Books). Charles Phillips is an established writer of popular history and was a contributor to Cassell's Dictionary of Modern Britain and Ancient Civilizations; and illustrated histories published by Dorling Kindersley, Guinness and Marshall Editions. He has a keen interest in British history and the story of the Royal Family and was a key writer of Time Life's Myth and Mankind series, which blends mythology with the art and history of ancient cultures. Fascinating look at a narrow subject

I bought this as a gift for my nephew who is extremely focused on period clothing and loves plaid. It's nicely laid out with a good balance of photography and explanations of the histories of the different clans who wear the different plaids. It would be a good addition to a sewist's or weaver's library, especially if they are history buffs. Historians will enjoy it because it's so much more than about the fabric.

Though thorough in an overview of the Tartan, many family and clan Tartans listed in the Scottish registry are not included. Going to the website for the country of Scotland is much more complete. Interesting reading and such in it's own way, rather disappointing for what is written in the description.

Writing Style Indicative of Author's Heritage

To understand the book and many of the reviews here, one has to consider the author. Valentine Penrose was active in the Surrealist art movement and published many surrealist poems. Radcliffe and the Marquis de Sade were great influences on her writing. This book is more than a historical tale; her love of gothic prose and words is as much a character in the book as the countess. Penrose's telling of the Bloody Countess's story stands out from those of other historians because Penrose is one of the only writers to tell the story without either an overt or covert Christian interpretation of the events. So, if you want just facts without wading through lots of writing, chose another text. If you are interested in surrealist writing or want a more avant-garde look at the Countess, read Penrose's.

The content is good, if not the way it is presented

There's alot of fuss being made about this book. I don't particularly see anything wrong with the prose style, except that it becomes a little heavy handed in some places. The fact of the matter is that this is the only freely available work on Erzebet Bathory, and as such it is superb. I thought it highly interesting, although it could have been structured better.

What would happen if Danielle Steel tried to be Oswald Spengler? The result would be something very similar to "The Bloody Countess" - an often incomprehensible account of historical events related in prose so flowery it stands to cause migraines. Penrose's work is a garbled mess of self-consciously mysterious language; hopelessly bogged down with high-flown speech, the story of Countess Bathory becomes lost in all the Kafkaesque prattle. She moves randomly from one topic to the next, following no logical thought patterns, often obscuring her points in meaningless, poetic drivel. I read this book seeking factual information on the history of Elizabeth Bathory and came out sorely disappointed; to call it unreadable would be a kindness.
