But the big surprise comes as architects around the world rediscover the virtues of this durable, biodegradable, and environmentally sound material, sufficiently versatile to create unique works of architecture and to house thousands in disaster zones. A History of an Invisible Building Material

An anonymous writer in 1833 called the public's attention to an architectural novelty that had appeared on the London docks: "Every observing person, on passing by it, cannot fail being struck... with its elegance and simplicity." What had brought this praise was the world's first building incorporating corrugated iron. One might think that the novelty of corrugated iron had surely led the writer into effusion about a subject otherwise unlikely to bring praise. And one might also think that a history of corrugated iron is one of the more unlikely subjects to be brought out in a colorful coffee-table book. There are many surprises in Corrugated Iron: Building on the Frontier (W. W. Norton & Company) by Adam Mornement and Simon Holloway, architectural historians who are enthusiasts for a material that provides shelter for millions and also is being used in upscale modern buildings with surprisingly beautiful effect. The authors say that corrugated iron has met diverse challenges of affordability, portability, utility, and strength, "but despite its many virtues, corrugated iron's contribution to society has rarely been acknowledged." Corrugated iron is everywhere, and because of this it has become invisible; this book is a handsome corrective to bring it back into view.

Corrugated iron was invented by Henry Robinson Palmer, Architect and Engineer to the London Dock Company, in 1829. He foresaw that the material could be used both as cladding upon an architectural framework and arched to make free-standing spans for roofing. Corrugated iron had advantages that innovative architects could use. The brilliant engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel adopted it early, and designed London's Paddington Station to be roofed in the material, with the corrugations running horizontally. There are no tie rods and no longitudinal beams between the rafters, because the corrugations in the roof provide tensile strength. Corrugated iron was used on lighthouses, whaling stations, and agricultural buildings. Prefabricated houses were designed with corrugated iron roofs and walls, and there are many illustrations here from catalogues from which people ordered such houses. Here also are pictures of the houses themselves, many of which are still being used. Most corrugated iron dwellings, however, were meant to be relatively temporary structures. Gold rushes in America, Australia, and South Africa proved to be workshops for such use, when living in tents was just too temporary a housing solution. There is a whole chapter here on churches made from corrugated iron, showing many of them of rural simplicity, but others with some Gothic splendor. Corrugated metal was not restricted to buildings; it was used to build boats, and the World War I Junker aircraft of Germany had wings of corrugated aluminum.

Corrugated iron will never escape completely its association with poverty. There are plenty of pictures here of shantytowns from all over the world, where corrugated iron is an architectural staple for improvised homes. There are other pictures of Nissan huts (the American version was the Quonset hut) used for wartime dwellings, and Buckminster Fuller used corrugated iron in a low-cost circular house called the Dymaxion Deployment Unit. The many pictures in the book's final chapter, though, show that corrugated metal has a place in the cladding of skyscrapers or in the homes of millionaires. Frank Gehry, for instance, has used it, and many of the modern buildings shown here are housed in huge loops or barrel forms of the material. It is used not only for its capacity to support and protect, but also as a sort of architectural sculpture. Many of the new and innovative buildings made from corrugated metal are from Australia, which has drawn on a tradition of using corrugated iron in the gold fields; there is no chance that these handsome, large houses of whimsical shape are going to be mistaken for shanties or for mobile homes. Corrugated iron is one of the most-used inventions humans have come up with, and paupers and tycoons are all taking advantage of it. About the Author
Steve Ruffley has been involved in the finance industry for 15 years. "If it's trading, then I've done it," is one of his favourite sayings. Steve's career began placing investments for high net worth clients at PricewaterhouseCoopers. He was quickly hooked on the financial markets. After moving to Gibraltar, he had the opportunity to join the Marex trading graduate scheme, which he completed. Later, Steve took the opportunity to risk manage some of the best traders in the business at Refco. This was a high-pressure environment where he had to simultaneously monitor all the major markets and up to 40 trading accounts at a time. At one point in the risk room there were 28 screens for two people. He then went on to run the live floor at Schneider, where there were around 144 traders. This was at the height of the prop trading boom. Over this period Steve had unparalleled access to the thoughts and strategies of some of the best traders around. He saw some common traits of success and also, more importantly, failure. Putting all this knowledge to use, Steve's next move was to start trading from home. Then, after a few years of lonely but successful trading, he decided that there was more to life. He decided to turn his hand to education and teamed up with InterTrader (intertrader.com) to become their chief market strategist and head of education. "Those who can, do; those who can't teach," the saying goes. Steve decided to prove he could do both, in real time with real money. Since 2010, Steve has presented nearly 1000 webinars on all aspects of trading and he has traded at over 150 live events, demonstrating how to make money in real market situations. What a refreshing read! In a marketplace almost saturated with experts telling us what, and what not to do, Steve's no-nonsense approach to demystefying the markets really cuts through the noise and helps me to understand just how the markets really work - and how to use this knowledge as a tool to profit. Economics can be dry as a subject, but Steve gets right to point and connects the dots as to why the fundamentals are key to giving you an edge in trading. The reality of intraday trading

This is a great book. It is easy to read and explains very well Steve's ideas and trading methodology. It is direct and straight to the point. It helps retail traders realise where they are in relation to the market and to the professional trader. It stresses the importance of a professional approach to retail trading. There are no crazy promises made about unattainable returns. The book teaches a logical approach to trading and the weighting between technical and fundamental trading. There is also a refreshing attitude to risk reward and stop losses which differs from the majority of conventional teaching.

Given the adult nature of this book, I will not review it detail, within a public forum, such as this. This book is erotica and deals with sexual issues. Within this context, some of the scenes do have elements of S&M. This can include spanking, birching and the like, as well as bondage. If you like English style Victorian erotica, don't miss this book.

The hottest piece of victorian erotica ever. The book deals
with the main character from the first 2 books in the series. He meets up with a woman and they open a "boarding and finishing" school where young girls are sent for very special kinds of learning. If you thought Anne Rice's Beauty series of books was hot, Man with a Maid: Book Three, will melt your fingers and your eyes.

Book one in this series is takes a while to get started, but is pretty good. Book two is a yawn. Book three is action from the start and never lets up.

I have to say that I read this book many years ago as a teenager and found it riveting. It was actually referred to as the bible at school by students.
Unfortunately it was lost somewhere along the way. Would love to get another copy but it has been out of print for some years.
If you can get your hands on it you will find it far superior to the other Man and a Maid books in the series.

About the Author
ANDREW BEYER thoroughly revolutionized handicapping when he created his “Beyer Speed Figures,” a measure of how fast a horse has run in a given race, and an indispensable tool for horseplayers. Making the necessary calculations to develop a set of figures for each horse in each race was too time-consuming for most horseplayers, so in 1992 the Daily Racing Form commissioned Beyer and his associates to provide his speed figures for every horse competing in North America. Beyer has been a columnist for the Washington Post since 1978, and contributes regularly to the Daily Racing Form. He is considered one of the leading experts on horse racing.

this is a good book to start with

If you want to improve your luck at the track, this is a good book to start with. Although the author claims that there is no sure way to pick em, he does explain all the deciding factors. I liked his stories (his experience and others'). If you want to get serious about playing the track, it takes comparative and analytical decision-making. And this author shows you how to analyze horses' track records - with lots of examples (which i liked). It's a good read (just for the stories alone) and you don't have to read the chapters sequentially. It's a good "reference" book too.

Although the methodology outlined in the book is now available in racing publications, the insights provided by the author concerning this wonderful game of thoroughbred racing are still meaningful, and would benefit all levels of players, from novice to expert.
