Not what I had expected

I had high hopes for this book, but it did not live up to my expectations. First, the positives... The breakdown on types of composition, along with thumbnail sketches, are VERY valuable. I also really liked Payne's suggestion that artist's study the compositions of others, as well as his own examples (i.e his thumbnails of other artists' work). If I remember correctly, Payne recommended that one should make thumbnails of others' work, which would certainly be very useful for most of us looking to improve our compositions. I don't think that Payne had listed every type of composition possible in landscape, though he listed most and he acknowledged he was not the final word on art. I would buy this book again, but just for the "meat" of the book. There was a lot of fluff to pad the book out, which is extremely unfortunate, because an artist of Payne's caliber certainly had more to offer us.

As for the negatives. I felt Payne merely touched on subjects that he could have written on in greater depth, like color, repetition, rhythm, and value. It was a slow read for me, mostly because Payne was extremely redundant. This was especially true in the first chapter and much of the third chapter, where Payne did not so much address composition as the necessity of learning the principles of art, while fostering artistic originality, although he repeated it in about a hundred different ways! Also, the book contains MANY typos; I thought editing was part of the publishing process, but I guess not. The addendum, by Payne's daughter, is oddly disjointed. I didn't feel it was in keeping with Payne's writing on the subject of composition. She brought up her mother, Elsie Palmer Payne (an artist) quite a bit, which is understandable, but nevertheless, seemed out of place. It is, after all, Edgar Payne's book on composition. Also, as other reviewers have commented, the plates (the illustrations and prints continually referred to) are unpredictably peppered throughout the text. Needless to say, this ill-conceived layout is EXTREMELY disruptive.

So, not a perfect book, but enough valuable, practical information to make it a worthwhile buy.

Must Read for the serious Outdoor Painter

Edgar Payne was one of the great american landscape painters, as well as a great teacher, and an accomplished writer.
I found his style of English to be a little more difficult to read, but after the first chapter or two I got used to it, and it was well worth the effort.

I highly recommend reading and referring to the chapter on compositional forms. He lists a dozen of the most commonly used outdoor compositions, and gives easy examples for understanding them.

Lots and lots of valuable information!

not like most artists books that contain pictures from the artist

This book is not as represented. It appears large in the picture, but don't be deceived; it is a very small book probably about 5X7, not like most artists books that contain pictures from the artist. I bought this for my husband who is an artist and whose library consists of books such as this that are all at least 10X12 and easy to read and look through.

Essential for self study if you use the textbook

"Fundamentals of Photonics" is still the definitive book on the generation of coherent light by lasers and incoherent light by sources such as light-emitting diodes, light transmission through optical devices, and the detection of light by semiconductor photodetectors even 14 years after it was first published. Unfortunately the exercises for this book are of such complexity that the book is of somewhat limited usefulness for self-study without the solutions manual. If you own "Fundamentals of Photonics" you have a real storehouse of well-presented knowledge on optoelectronics. However, if you have the solution manual as well, you have established a synergistic relationship that should really supercharge your knowledge in this area. I know I really regret misplacing my copy of the solutions manual for this book and would pay just about any price to get that copy back or any other copy.
PLEASE NOTE that after 15 years a second edition is scheduled for release in May 2006 (ISBN 0471784761) by the same publisher as the first edition. It will be 200 pages longer and feature two new chapters to cover the advances in the field of photonics: Photonic-Crystal Optics and Ultrafast Optics, so this edition of the solutions manual may not be relevant much longer.

Three Words

I received a publisher's advance copy of W. Bruce Cameron's first novel, "A Dog's Purpose". In a word? Magnificent. OK, two words. Brilliant. Actually three. Soul.
Bruce Cameron has brought forth a magnificent, touching piece of a soul's journey through life in search of purpose and meaning. At times hilarious and yet other times heart breaking, Bruce brilliantly weaves a story of a dog and its quest that is told with such heart and humanity that anyone who has ever had a dog (or any pet , for that matter) feels that this truly is how they see us and the world in which they live.
The humor is real and effortless. You will find yourself laughing out loud. You will also cry. Real tears born out of your life's memories of pets past and the essential intertwining of souls that exists in no other relationship.
That bond (from the dog's perspective) is what brings the true love in this novel to life.
Though many dream of writing that one great novel, the difference here is that Bruce Cameron has done it right out of the gate and I have a feeling that there is plenty more where that came from. An essential, five star must read.

An Absolutely, Positively Wonderful Book

A Dog's Purpose is one of the most fantastic, wonderful books I've ever read. Many have tried to write from the animal's perspective, but Bruce Cameron has hit it head on. I've never experienced so many emotions while reading one book. I laughed, I cried, I cheered.

Put in the context of what is going on in my life right now, I was just waiting for A Dog's Purpose. My son and his wife had to have their 15-year-old golden retriever put to sleep after a long and full life, a short time ago. Even though I was 1,300 miles away from them at the time, I went through the pain and the grief. Right now I'm visiting with him and his wife and we started talking about them getting another dog. Initial reluctance moved on to checking out rescue web sites to starting to make a list of potential new puppies. And then they found THE ONE. And so while I was reading A Dog's Purpose, Tucker came to live with my son and his wife. I can see in Tucker's face the knowledge, the understanding and the love that is embodied in A Dog's Purpose.

My son is reading A Dog's Purpose right now and I know he is finding comfort in his old friend's passing in those pages and joy in the new, exuberant life that has joined their household.

Absolutely Wonderful!!!

Dog lovers will absolutely love this book. The author masterfully captures what many of us would imagine to be the thought processes of our dogs, and makes the reader think about the role we play in our pets' lives, for good and for bad. While the book has its uplifting moments, make sure to have some tissues nearby as there are many, many tearful moments in the story of this dog's numerous lives. Lest anyone think that this is yet another book in the growing dog channeling genre, rest assured that this book is much more than that. This is a book that will make you think not only about the purpose of a dog's life, but the purpose of life in general.

Bookkeeping Workbook for Dummies (UK Edition - updated with �'s although the font is rather an unusual one!)

Although I am no expert, I have completed an accounting (AAT) and a bookkeeping course (RSA) before, several years ago (and I know more about bookkeeping than beekeeping, that's for sure!) However, I felt my current circumstances would benefit from a refresher course and that's exactly what I got and more.

In true "Guides for Dummies" style, Chartered Accountant Jane Kelly, ACMA, and Finance Expert, Lita Epstein. MBA, share their joint knowledge through interactive exercises, which demonstrate a wide variety of financial transactions and highlight the problems that can occur.

From the bookkeeping basics (discovering your business type, understanding terms and day-to-day transaction management) through to the more advanced (corrections of ledgers, P&L statements and the "Top Ten Problems to Practise") it's a workbook packed with information, samples and solutions with that famous touch of humour to make it more fun and less of a number-crunching chore. A great reference and workbook to keep close by for anyone starting a business, or needing a refresher course produced by the popular "Dummies" brand many of us already know and trust and it gets top marks from me for what I need. Whether it is suitable for accounting professionals these days, I am uncertain, but if in doubt please check with your tutor.

An excellent history

Definitely not a book for readers wanting something quick, Pilgrimage of Grace is, nonetheless, an interesting look at events transpiring during the years 1536 to 1537 which could have seriously cost Henry VIII his reign. Commoners and gentry, along with some noblemen united in a series of uprisings against the policies of stripping the monasteries, but more because of their great dislike of Thomas Cromwell, along with other prelates they considered as "heretical." There were other reasons as well, largely monetary and political in nature that caused angry mobs to join together to try to effect change. In most cases, the uprising grew as those who led the movement forced others into joining, until thousands of armed men stood against poorly-maintained, poorly paid and often sympathetically-minded troops under the command of the officials sent to quash the rebellion. It was the job of different dukes to maintain order, and in this case, the work fell to the Duke of Norfolk and for the first, smaller rebellion in Lincolnshire, the Duke of Suffolk.

The author does an excellent job with primary sources, often noting the bias in many of the accounts of the time, depending on authorship. He has woven together an outstanding look at causes, events and effects of these uprisings, examining not only the changes in the church under Henry VIII, but economic and political factors as well. He portrays Henry VIII as a monarch with a penchant for revenge and a monstrous temperament. At the end of the book he poses the question of what would have happened had the rebels not stopped their activities when and where they did, offering food for further thought.

This is definitely not a book for general readership -- you pretty much have to decide you're in it for the long haul to finish it -- but it is a very well-written history of the time. I'd recommend it to people who enjoy a good history, and those who want to know more about the reign of Henry VIII. Highly recommended.

Among the issues that have divided Eastern and Western Christians throughout the centuries, few have had as long and interesting a history as the question of the filioque. Christians everywhere confess their faith in the ancient words of the Nicene Creed. But rather than serve as a source of unity, the Creed has been one of the chief sources of division, as East and West profess their faith in the Trinitarian God using different language. In the Orthodox East, the faithful profess their belief in "the Holy Spirit, who proceeds from the Father." In the West, however, they say they believe in the Holy Spirit, who proceeds from the Father "and the Son"-in Latin "filioque." For over a millennium Christendom's greatest minds have addressed and debated the question (sometimes in rather polemical terms) in the belief that the theological issues at stake were central to an orthodox understanding of the trinitarian God. To most modern people, this may seem like a trivial matter, and indeed most ordinary Christians would be hard pressed to explain the doctrine behind this phrase. The new standard in Filioquist studies

This book not only traced the Filioque controversy, it also embodied the spirit of it. This reader felt not only the logical force of both sides' arguments, but sometimes the emotional turmoil that went with them. For example, if the Council of Ferrara-Florence was the most painful moment in Church history, it was also the most painful chapter in this book. Siecienski has done what few thought possible: present a fair, balanced account of a subject that probably defies human though and has started several wars.

Siecienski's method is to read the fathers' and theologians' arguments per the internal relationships of the Trinity and avoid any type of simple reduction into a "pro-Western" or "pro-Eastern" model, except where the case is obvious like in Photios, Aquinas, and Anselm. This is an important move. When Western fathers like Hilary and Ambrose say that the Spirit proceeds et filii or even Filioque, Siecienski denies they are saying what later Filioquist polemics say they are saying. What Siecienski implies but does not say is important: these fathers do not teach the development of the filioque , and if they do not teach the development of the filioque, they are actually witnesses to the normativity of the Eastern model.

The hero of this story is St Maximus the Confessor. He demonstrates a way to interpret Western fathers who spoke in language similar to the filioque as a way of expressing the eternal relationship between the Son and the Spirit--which he thinks is what the Filioque was trying to do. The text under consideration is his Letter to Marinus, and the reception of that text at varying points in European history says a lot about the presuppositions of either side. The Latins originally championed the text and saw Maximus as a good Roman Catholic. Did not Maximus say the Filioque was orthodox and did he not appeal to the Pope? The Orthodox then responded that Maximus specifically denied causality to the Son. Whatever else Maximus may have meant by Filioque--and it's not clear he understood precisely what Filioque would later mean--he is not using the term in the sense it would later be used. The Latins realized this and at other points in history they denied the authenticity of Marinus.

Maximus is reading the Filioque to say (if not accurately) that the Spirit proceeds through the Son from the Father alone. For him this is the superior understanding for it maintains both an eternal relationship between Spirit and Son yet maintains the causality of the Father alone. He says while the Spirit does not derive from the Son, his procession from the Father always presupposes the Son (Siecienski, 77). What this eternal relationship entails exactly is not clear, and it would be the work of Gregory II of Cyprus and St. Gregory Palamas to expand upon it.

As is the case with many polemical controversies, after a while there is not anything new being said. One notices a common theme, a charge and a counter, running behind the numerous florigela and Scripture references. The East charges the West with introducing two causes into the Godhead, the Father and the Son. Since the time of St Gregory of Nazianzus all admitted the monarchia of the Father. The Father is the principle of unity as he causes the other two persons of the Trinity. When the West began positing the Son as part of that cause, which they had to do if they were to uphold filioquist logic, the East responded that the West is introducing two causes in the Godhead. The West responded that it was positing the two persons as one cause of unity. To the East, that was a distinction without a difference.

Conclusions and Response

This book will likely be the standard in Filioquist studies for the near future. It is published by Oxford, which means all must defer to its teachings, and the author writes with a spirit of peace and a hope for the unity of the Church. While the weight of the argument leans to the East, he avoids simple reductions.

Because of his charitable spirit, which is to be praised, Siecienski does not always follow through with his arguments. He does not note the interconnection between a strong Filioquist theology and a strong view of papal supremacy. To note this, however, one must also discuss absolute divine simplicity and the Latins' different interpretation of "one" and "unity." (The "many" are reduced to "the one.") Thomas Aquinas is very clear on this point--the filioque and papal rule stand or fall together. For this reason I disagree with his suggestion that the Church could have been unified at the Council of Florence had the Emperor allowed Mark of Ephesus to expound Gregory II of Cyprus' teaching on eternal manifestation (158). Yes, if he had been allowed to expound upon these teachings, the anti-unionists would have clearly won the debate at Florence. But given the framework upholding the Filioque and Papal universal jurisdiction (see the Pope wanting the Patriarch to kiss his boots in public and in obedience), it is hard to imagine the Pope simply capitulating to these arguments.

On a similar note, and in good modern academic fashion, Siecienski simply dismisses the logical force of Photios's arguments. He never says where Photios is wrong. To be fair to Siecienski, though, if he had engaged what Photios implied, he would have to broaden the scope of his project. Photios is giving a genealogy of the Filioque. One suspects the reason modern academicians do not seriously engage Photios is because his arguments resist the trend of microhistory.

The book is worth the $50. Given the dearth of accessible, yet balanced literature on this topic, Siecienski's project will likely be a landmark for the next decade.

Good historical overview, no original thought

I bought this book to get more insight into its topic, which has been controverted between Eastern and Western Christians for over a millennium. I've often discussed the doctrine and clause of the filioque with Eastern-Orthodox and Eastern-Catholic believers, as well as with educated, ecumenically-minded, but thoroughly orthodox Catholics. The book is an excellent historical overview of the controversy; the notes and bibliography form a good point of departure for further research.

Hardliners on both sides will not be the only ones disappointed, however. Many Orthodox will dislike it because it does not reject the doctrine outright. Many Catholics will dislike it because its only real ecumenical proposal is that Rome drop the filioque clause from the Creed recited in the Roman Rite on Sundays. All in all, Siecienski offers no original suggestions for overcoming the sterile polemics that have prevented the filioque issue from getting off the dime for centuries.
