Questions to get you through anatomy!

My anatomy exam scores differed based on whether I did the questions in this book or not (did questions=did well; no time to do questions=barely passed). There are A LOT of questions in this book - which is great, because most concepts repeat and this of course reinforces learning. It also means that you should start the questions ASAP - don't wait until you've finished reading the text, dissector, whatever. Use your text and atlas as references while you start the questions right away!

All questions are in multiple choice format, either in "standard" type A format (A-E, single best answer), or in type K format, which I had never heard of before this book but got used to it fairly quickly. There are no pictures, tables, or diagrams (that's what your text and atlas are for). The thorough explanations are on the right side of the page opposite the question.

I highly recommend this book based on my anatomy experience.

The best way to get honors in medical school anatomy

This book is hard to find, but well worth the search and expense. If you are aiming for a competitive residency, you know how important it is to honor classes. The "blue and gold book" will help.

There are over 2500 multiple choice questions listed on the left-hand side of the page. On the right-hand side are in depth answers. The chapters are organized by anatomical areas that mimic course progression. Important concepts are reinforced by having the same idea reworded in multiple questions.

The more questions I did, the better I scored on my anatomy and embryology exams. Some of my exam questions were nearly identical to those I encountered in this book.

RQ series(Parthenon Publishing Group inc) are lesser known than other board review books, but offer in depth review in a question and answer format similar to the "Recall" series books, but with multiple choice questions. RQ is a bargain for the number and quality of the questions!!

McCall follows up his critically acclaimed autobiography Makes Me Wanna Holler (1994) with this eye-opening collection of personal essays on race and racism in America. One of the principal themes that crops up here, in tones that range from levity to gravity, is that of childhood and parenthood. In the essay entitled ``The Problem with Babies,'' a white toddler who tries to engage McCall in play in a fast-food restaurant is depicted as a sort of adorable predator; the child's ignorance of racial tension between his mother and McCall leads to the conclusion that babies ``don't give a damn about the racial boundaries that grown-ups impose.'' In other pieces, McCall meditates on his son, as he condemns both whites and blacks for the intraracial violence that he states, in no uncertain terms, is destroying the African-American community; he writes of his daughter in an essay in which he confesses to having committed sexual assaults on several women as a young man, not realizing that he wasn't entitled to their favors by virtue of his being male. It is this surprisingly and often disarmingly confessional tone that brings cohesion to these essays. McCall knows his own faults and those of the very community that he defends and of which he is part; he can be slow to admit that those faults include poor family structure and upbringing. He is far quicker to finger white racism as a cause for black suffering, but his strong defense lies in his own experiences. While McCall is reluctant to divorce himself from acceptance of Louis Farrakhan, it is his essay on Muhammad Ali that better depicts a black dissenter as a model human being. MR McCALL DOES IT AGAIN

I found this book to be excellent.The way Mr.McCall delves into the core of things is a rare treat.After reading his other book MAKES ME WANNA HOLLER i know i was hooked on the particular writing brilliance of Mr.McCall. Although i am a female i have found his work geared toward both sexes although holler was more of a male book.I learned alot about black men after reading holler. Now if had to pick a favorite chapter from WHAT'S GOING ON if would have to be GANGSTAS, GUNS, AND SHOOT'EM-UPS cause he digged into the whole aspect of the gabgsta rap mentality. he writes abot the east coast,west coast beef.and for many of us who are true rap fans we know that during that beef we lost two of the biggest rappers.I also liked how in the chapter on THE FATHER OF OUR COUNTRY he goes on and discusses how washingtom wasn't really all that. and how their has been a cover-up for years. white people dont want to admit the "father"was tipping in the slave quather's.it's just another case of the chickens coming home to roost.And last i would like to mention the chapter ON REDEMPTION.This chapter was a tear jerker he was talking about his homeboy SHANE dying and how at the funeral no one really had a decent thing to say about him.The most enduring part is how the mother of SHANE victim's found her REDEMPTION not by gloating at the funeral but by forgiving. And isn't that what it really is all about? So i conclusion Mr McCall shine on and i will be awaiting your next book.

The Author of the acclaimed bestseller "Makes Me Wanna Holler" strikes again with a collection of personal essays and observations entitled "What's Going On". Nathan McCall challenges readers to view the world through his eyes and share his experiences using a fluid writing style and substantive content.
Entering a new millennium, African Americans are faced with many so-called "hot button" topics. Many of these issues have been discussed and belabored at length. Some of these issues are so sensitive that authors, politicians, and community leaders will often shy away from them being careful not to damage hard earned notoriety. McCall is clearly not vying for first prize in any popularity contests; likewise, he makes sure to point out which of his views he knows will not be shared by many of his readers."What's Going On" addresses issues pertinent to blacks of this generation and his feelings regarding issues African Americans face in our daily lives.
While a book of personal opinion may not sound like an exciting read, "What's Going On" carries a heavyweight punch that travels from different ends of the spectrum and tends to surprise readers with every new chapter. In McCall's first book, the autobiography "Makes Me Wanna Holler", I was impressed with this authors journey from convicted felon to well traveled, acclaimed Washington Post Reporter. The autobiography was so inspirational to me that I jumped at the opportunity to read his newest creation. McCall's candor in all of the subject matter addressed is both poignant and refreshing. It's reasonable to assume that most African American readers will not agree with every single point, however it does provide an entertaining yet thought provoking look at modern day society.
I recommend "What's Going On" to the over 35 crowd, particularly those with a keen interest in current events. I also feel that these essays would make perfect topics for book club discussions. I give "What's Going On" a rating of 4.

A Lucid And Somewhat Refreshing Resemblance

Interestingly, I kept McCall's first book on my shelf for at least three or four years. I have a very heavy schedule and just couldn't find time to read it. I did blindly recommend it to a relaitive of mine who had made a mistake and ended up doing time. About two weks ago, I finally decided to read it. After finishing MAKE ME WANNA HOLLER, I was really upset that my relative didn't read. The book is a wonderful depiction of one of the most misunderstood segments of American life. The author came forth as honest as he could be. There were traces of Eldridge Cleaver, George Jackson, and Malcolm X. Only traces though - McCall's political concerns were not steeped (not yet). WHATS GOING ON reveals a more political minded author. I will place these essays on my shelf next to his first book. The author and I are the same age and we both grew up as black males in a most-times psychologically imbalanced society. We KNOW what the dangers are. So many of his thoughts are common to my experience. Reading both books make me look way back and reflect upon events that I thought I had safely placed away. This guy's an excellent writer. Some reviewers feel as if he's not telling the whole truth - but who really does? McCall should continue writing, continue to take on life as it comes. He should continue exposing the truth about the life so many of us know. The truth told in the clear way that he tells it.

The Middle East has changed clearly, substantially, and dramatically during the last decade. Yet scholarly and public understanding lags far behind recent events. Barry Rubin's historical and political summation of the region shows how events and ideas have both shaped and altered its character. Three interlinked themes are crucial to the book. First, a reinterpretation of the era of recent upheaval the Middle East has just passed through, which the author calls the Era of Radical Expectations. During that period, many Arabs believed that some leader, country, or radical movement would unite the region, solving all its problems. Second, an evaluation of how the historical experience of the period between the 1940s and the 1990s undermined the old system, making change necessary. Third, an analysis of the region today that explains future developments, in what the author terms the Era of Reluctant Pragmatism, as the Middle Eastern societies determine their relationships to the West. For a brief period in the 1990s, peace in the Middle East seemed possible. Now that that's over, Rubin seeks to explain what went wrong. In his sixteenth book on the region, he argues that Arab leaders balked at peace because it presented too great a threat to their own power. Blaming external enemies Israel and the United States has long enabled Arab regimes to channel frustration away from their own failures, Rubin writes, and governments across the region reverted to this strategy when peace seemed likely to break out. This is not the first time that Rubin, who is the editor of the Middle East Review of International Affairs, has carefully summed up very recent events. His widely acclaimed 1999 book, The Transformation of Palestinian Politics: From Revolution to State-Building, analyzed the inner workings of the Palestinian Authority. But while the tone of that book was cautiously hopeful, in his new work he sees no realistic path to a brighter future. This is a dense but well-argued read, and timely, too, as Westerners seek an explanation for why most if not all of the September 11th hijackers hail from U.S. allies Saudi Arabia and Egypt.

Good Intro to the Mess that is the Modern Middle East

Rubin is a specialist in contemporary Middle Eastern politics and terrorism. After an overview that provides some historical background and general explanations for the region's problems backed up by examples (the first 70 pages), there are three chapters devoted to Iraq, Syria and Iran, respectively, and then four chapters dealing with state-sponsored terrorism, the struggle within Islam, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and U.S. foreign policy.

Rubin's analysis contains a good number of insights that make this book more than worth reading. For example, Rubin argues that the ideology of Arab nationalism (or Arabism), historically a rallying cry of Arab unity and strength since the 1950s, has actually been a major source of violence and instability. This is because it has been repeatedly used to justify domestic repression and violent intervention in the affairs of other states. Rubin asks the reader to imagine how much worse Latin America's problems would be if Spanish-speaking countries were constantly plotting against one another, trying to form a region-wide power base. I would put it this way: imagine if Mexico, rather than focusing on its own economic development, were to persue a political union with Columbia, invade Ecuador, and sponsor a coup in Argentina. The region would like more like the Arab world.

My major disagreement with Rubin is that he clearly believes in the popular theory that Arab anti-Americanism (and anti-Semitism/hatred of Israel) is essentially the result of goverment-controlled media fanning the flames of popular passion in order to divert attention away from the failures of Arab governments. There are indeed many examples of this, but it has two flaws. First, this theory does not explain similar responses prior to the rise of modern state media. For example, how to explain the violently anti-British response of Arab populations in the 1920s which had tolerated Ottoman rule for 400 years, when the Britains were no more repressive than the Ottomans and improved material conditions? Second, this theory doesn't explain why independent Muslim media sources tend to be as, if not more, anti-American and pro-terrorist than official media. Rubin analyzes Al-Jazeera, which is quasi-independent, but does not explain how so many independent sources, including educated Arabs living in the West, hold views like those expressed by official Arab media.

The underlying source of the regions' passions must lie elsewhere, and I would point to two. The first is the political psychology of Islam, which makes any non-Muslim power in the Middle East unpopular, however beneficial it might be. The second is the general tendency of all peoples, Muslim or otherwise, to resent the rise of a dominant power from another culture. This is especially true for a people like the Arabs, who have a long and proud historical memory of powerful Arab and Islamic empires (i.e. the Abbasids). The theory that region's anti-Americanism results from bad goverments is conforting because it suggests a (relatively) easy solution - get rid of the governments. But if the problem has to do with underlying culture, then you have a much greater problem, and we do.

The fact that the book has Saddam Hussein on the cover makes it appear somewhat anachronistic, but all of the problems and issues that Rubin addresses are still there, and I don't have a problem recommending it.

An excellent book about the modern Middle East

Rubin makes some excellent points in this book.

One topic he addresses is the failure of the Camp David peace talks between Israel, led by Barak, and Arafat. Some people think the talks failed because the Arabs refused to offer peace. Some think they failed because the Israelis failed to make any serious concessions to achieve peace. I happen to think that they failed for two reasons: the Israelis were never offered the only thing they wanted, namely peace, and the Arabs were offered land and a state, neither of which they actually wanted.

Rubin disagrees with all these ideas. He states that the immediate problem was that a settlement was indeed close. And it was the threat of peace that scared the Arab side. Peace might destabilize Arab regimes. And given that Arab leaders had spent years crafting an extremist public opinion, they now chose to let that public opinion scuttle negotiations. I think this is an interesting possibility.

The author also reminds us that "terrorism is not a weapon of the poor or oppressed but a carefully thought out revolutionary tactic."

Rubin quotes a couple of Arabs who say that from a practical standpoint, Arabs would be better off making peace. After all, it is unlikely that the more extreme Arabs will achieve all their demands, some of which are quite unreasonable. And they are ignoring the balance of forces. But Rubin explains that in this situation, Arabs are indeed ignoring the balace of forces.

I would go further than that. First, I would note that part of the Arab demands happen to be to deprive Jews and others of rights to life, liberty, and property. Such demands are arbitrary. Next, I would note that Arab demands happen to include the theft of Levantine land from the land-poor. Even if these demands are met now, in the long run, non-Arabs will almost surely buy even more Levantine land than they now have, and keep it. And finally, I do agree with the implication that anti-peace Arabs are regarding war as something desirable in and of itself, even if the balance of forces is very poor.

The author quotes a poll taken by al-Jazeera in 2001 which asked which was worse, Zionism or Nazism. I found this interesting. You see, I regard Zionism, which is simply Jewish nationalism, as the application of human rights for everyone, including Jews. Given that I support human rights, I support Zionism. And I regard Nazism as opposition to human rights. But how would the majority of Arabs see it? Many of them supported the Nazis. And many are against human rights for themselves, against human rights for Women, against human rights for minorities, and against Jewish rights in particular. Obviously, quite a few Arabs oppose human rights, and might well like Nazism and dislike Zionism.

Anyway, the poll came out with 84.6% preferring Nazism (saying Zionism was worse than Nazism), 2.7% preferring Zionism, and 11.1% regarding them equally "bad." I guess the rest had no opinion.

Rubin concludes that the tendency towards anti-American politics in Arab lands is hurting Arab people in general. So are anti-Western, anti-American, and anti-Israeli lies. And those who purport to champion the "Arab Cause" are in fact adding to Arab misery.

About the Author
Shailesh Kadakia, originally from Mumbai, India, earned his graduate degree MSEE in electrical engineering with emphasis on computer technology from the University of Texas at Austin in 1981. From 1981 to 2001, he was employed as an information technology engineer in several blue chip manufacturing corporations. During his 20-year IT career, he was issued five patents in computer technology (circuits and systems), and published over twenty-five reports and papers in journals. He contributed to the successful completion of projects at National Semiconductor, Texas Instruments, Cirrus Logic, Motorola Semiconductor, Hewlett Packard, LSI Logic, Silicon Graphics, Entropic Communication, and NxtWave Communication. For proposing the idea of the Smart Card for national security, he was awarded the Business Man of the Year 2005 award from the National Republican Congressional Committee. In April of 2010, he published the first book, True Physics of Light, Beyond Relativity. The book has been well received at several universities and community colleges.

Complex Topics Explained With Ease-Perfect for College Students

Shailesh R. Kadakia's True Physics of Light, Beyond Relativity (second edition) delves into a fascinating, insightful discussion involving the fundamental gaps in Einstein's theory of relativity, particularly the lack of information on the motion of light and the primary features that distinguish the wave nature of light from that of the particle theory. Introducing intriguing and well-refined concepts such as absolute time and the true speed of light, Kadakia's text supplies the reader with powerful information about the workings of the universe in a nicely-packed, easy to understand book that is "most suitable for novice and expert readers who wish to advance the knowledge of light wave physics to the next level."

Essentially, Kadakia strives to enhance the individual's understanding of cosmology by way of the theory of special and general relativity. Ideally, True Physics of Light is textbook material, catering to second-year university students and experienced physics professors as well as physicists. Kadakia does an outstanding job of simplifying and providing a step-by-step explanation, with tables and illustrations, of complex topics such as Planck's quantum waves.

Shailesh’s book tackles the difficulty of understanding light as an entity in physical science. It
presents arguments (both in words and mathematical forms) that highlight the limitations of Albert
Einstein’s theory of relativity. It attempts to address the misconceptions a lot of people have about
the attributes of light. The book is a move forward from the physics that ‘everyday’ people have
come to encounter during their schooling days (assuming that they chose to study physics at upper
secondary levels). The contents of the book are almost too controversial, but in a good way as
challenging existing theories and postulates is a way forward in the field of science. New ideas such
as the notion of ‘skylativity’ and the integration of gravity at quantum scales are presented, and
have been substantiated by a good number of backing information including mathematical
expressions and equations. If the new ideas presented in this book become widely accepted in the
physics community, its impact on educating our youth with physics will be dramatic – it will
virtually change every single physics/physical science textbook used in schools.

The book was clearly designed for university students who are studying physics. The concepts and
arguments are clear enough to understand. The graphics and illustrations add to the appeal to read
the textbook. This book has a very good potential to gain wide acceptance in the school/university
market.

The strange nature and behavior of light energy waves has made it the most poorly understood energy source in nature. This book describes new ways of describing light and its various properties. Subjects covered deal with whether light is a wave or a particle, the physics of electromagnetic waves, limitations of Einstein's Special Relativity, black holes, accurate weather forecast and the origin of infinite universe, plus several other topics.

The author's purpose for publishing this book is to introduce facts about light, particles, waves, and how they relate to the entire universe that are unconventional compared with current thinking. These facts are verified by mathematics described in the book and lead to a new way of thinking about the universe in which we live.

Shialesh Kadakia, originally from Mumbai, India, earned his MSEE degree in electrical engineering from the University of Texas. He was awarded National Science Foundation funding for his research and thesis completion. During his 20 year career as an Information Technology Engineer at several manufacturing companies, he was issued five patents in computer technology circuits and systems, and had 25 reports and papers published in various journals. He was also awarded "Businessman of the Year" title for proposing the idea of a "smart card" for national security and is listed in the Cambridge directory of Who's Who.

"True Physics of Light, Beyond Relativity," although a technical book, is easy to read and does not contain any mathematics beyond intermediate calculus. The concepts and ideas are sometimes unusual, but, after all, that is what the book is all about.

The reader should be prepared to re-think some of the scientific ideas that have been widely accepted for a long time. Even such scientific icons such as Einstein and Maxwell have been questioned here, making the reading of the book fascinating.
