An Oldie but a Goldie

Guptill wrote this book early in the 20th century and it carries an illustrators overtones. However it offers clear and concise instruction in the art of pencil sketching from the basics to finer points of detail. I originally bought the book from a curiosity point of view, but, found it's practical and concise instruction very much to my liking even though the illustrations were clearly early 20th century.

Beautifully presented this is a classic in the art instruction genre.

Wonderful illustrations

This splendid and inexpensive book is one of a long list of "old" art manuals published by Dover, a publisher I will never thank enough for its commitment to re-publishing these wonderful volumes. Like most of such manuals, these are not step-by-step how-to manuals and if this is what you are looking for you should definitely look elsewhere. Rather, this book is a very "wordy" manual, written in beautiful and (given its age) old-fashioned English.

Keep in mind, however, that I am not really using this book as a guide, so I cannot duly evaluate its usefuleness along this important dimension. I purchased this book because I love pencil and ink and I enjoy watching and studying good artwork. In this dimension, this book is outstanding. Rather than pages and pages of simple exercises to help, step-by-step, to produce somewhat un-remarkable drawings, this book contains many examples of wonderful art by accomplished artists. There are examples of architecture, animals, landscapes and human figures. All of them a real pleasure to watch. Coupled with the interesting text and the remarkably low price, I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes pencil.

If you like this book you should also check out Guptill's "Rendering in Pen and Ink", which I love even better than this one, and that for a similarly low price offers countless examples of truly awesome black & white artwork. At the time I am writing this review the "look inside" option is not yet available on Amazon for "Pencil", but it available already for "Pen and Ink". I would then check a few pages of "Pen and Ink" to have a better idea about structure and content, which is very similar between the two books.

Amazing book! Not only does it feature furniture designs/profiles ...

Amazing book! Not only does it feature furniture designs/profiles of the people who made them but very detailed and instructional plans. Each project has photographic illustrations as well as the technical details...it is so refreshing to have all of the information there unlike other books/websites! It is also excellently designed in terms of layout and aesthetics. I can't wait to get started!

Design Pieces Could be Made From Any Scrap Lumber. Written from European perspective.

This book fell far below my expectations. I expected a book with plans that utilized the entire pallet, or most of a whole pallet (as the book's cover suggests); rather than plans that produced finished pieces that show no evidence of their pallet origins. It was first published in France, and is clearly written from the French/European perspective. The designs may be popular in Europe or France, but they are not all necessarily in style in the United States. Some of the design plans call for Euro pallets, which are much more difficult to find in most regions of the U.S. than other standard pallet sizes. The dimensions in the plans are given primarily as metric measurements, with the standard measurements appearing in parentheses. For many of the designs, scrap boards will work equally well, if not better, and you would not need to bother with a pallet. For those plans, if you have a source of scrap lumber, it would probably be easier to use those pieces of scrap (which are probably from higher quality lumber than that used to make most pallets) rather than finding a pallet, dismantling it, removing nails, and cutting the pieces to size. On a positive note, the plans seem to be detailed and provide helpful illustrations.

Here’s a summary of the contents:
• The first 17 pages are introductory and include pallet types, required basic tools, tips and pointers, history, dismantling instruction, and pallet terms.
• After each plan, there is a biographical page for the designer.
• The designs and plans are:
1) Child’s Bed
2) Floor Lamp
3) Armchair
4) Sun Lounger
5) Coffee Table
6) “Bead Head” (headboard for bed)
7) Coat Stand (you would not even need a pallet for this plan, any scrap wood could easily suffice)
8) Garden Table (requires Euro pallet)

10) Corner Shelf (again, you would not even need a pallet for this plan, any scrap wood could easily suffice)
11) Pouffe (foot stool)
12) Kitchen Shelves
13) Wall Lights
14) Shelf Unit
15) Picnic Tray (uses pallet board offcuts…again, you would not even need a pallet for this plan, any scrap wood could easily suffice)

The book contains a few good inspirational ideas, so I’m glad I purchased it, but I plan to return it for a refund. In other words, I would not purchase this book again, although I might check it out from a library. I liked the cover and page material. It is paperback, but seems quite durable.
