But the big surprise comes as architects around the world rediscover the virtues of this durable, biodegradable, and environmentally sound material, sufficiently versatile to create unique works of architecture and to house thousands in disaster zones. A History of an Invisible Building Material

An anonymous writer in 1833 called the public's attention to an architectural novelty that had appeared on the London docks: "Every observing person, on passing by it, cannot fail being struck... with its elegance and simplicity." What had brought this praise was the world's first building incorporating corrugated iron. One might think that the novelty of corrugated iron had surely led the writer into effusion about a subject otherwise unlikely to bring praise. And one might also think that a history of corrugated iron is one of the more unlikely subjects to be brought out in a colorful coffee-table book. There are many surprises in Corrugated Iron: Building on the Frontier (W. W. Norton & Company) by Adam Mornement and Simon Holloway, architectural historians who are enthusiasts for a material that provides shelter for millions and also is being used in upscale modern buildings with surprisingly beautiful effect. The authors say that corrugated iron has met diverse challenges of affordability, portability, utility, and strength, "but despite its many virtues, corrugated iron's contribution to society has rarely been acknowledged." Corrugated iron is everywhere, and because of this it has become invisible; this book is a handsome corrective to bring it back into view.

Corrugated iron was invented by Henry Robinson Palmer, Architect and Engineer to the London Dock Company, in 1829. He foresaw that the material could be used both as cladding upon an architectural framework and arched to make free-standing spans for roofing. Corrugated iron had advantages that innovative architects could use. The brilliant engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel adopted it early, and designed London's Paddington Station to be roofed in the material, with the corrugations running horizontally. There are no tie rods and no longitudinal beams between the rafters, because the corrugations in the roof provide tensile strength. Corrugated iron was used on lighthouses, whaling stations, and agricultural buildings. Prefabricated houses were designed with corrugated iron roofs and walls, and there are many illustrations here from catalogues from which people ordered such houses. Here also are pictures of the houses themselves, many of which are still being used. Most corrugated iron dwellings, however, were meant to be relatively temporary structures. Gold rushes in America, Australia, and South Africa proved to be workshops for such use, when living in tents was just too temporary a housing solution. There is a whole chapter here on churches made from corrugated iron, showing many of them of rural simplicity, but others with some Gothic splendor. Corrugated metal was not restricted to buildings; it was used to build boats, and the World War I Junker aircraft of Germany had wings of corrugated aluminum.

Corrugated iron will never escape completely its association with poverty. There are plenty of pictures here of shantytowns from all over the world, where corrugated iron is an architectural staple for improvised homes. There are other pictures of Nissan huts (the American version was the Quonset hut) used for wartime dwellings, and Buckminster Fuller used corrugated iron in a low-cost circular house called the Dymaxion Deployment Unit. The many pictures in the book's final chapter, though, show that corrugated metal has a place in the cladding of skyscrapers or in the homes of millionaires. Frank Gehry, for instance, has used it, and many of the modern buildings shown here are housed in huge loops or barrel forms of the material. It is used not only for its capacity to support and protect, but also as a sort of architectural sculpture. Many of the new and innovative buildings made from corrugated metal are from Australia, which has drawn on a tradition of using corrugated iron in the gold fields; there is no chance that these handsome, large houses of whimsical shape are going to be mistaken for shanties or for mobile homes. Corrugated iron is one of the most-used inventions humans have come up with, and paupers and tycoons are all taking advantage of it. About the Author
Steve Ruffley has been involved in the finance industry for 15 years. "If it's trading, then I've done it," is one of his favourite sayings. Steve's career began placing investments for high net worth clients at PricewaterhouseCoopers. He was quickly hooked on the financial markets. After moving to Gibraltar, he had the opportunity to join the Marex trading graduate scheme, which he completed. Later, Steve took the opportunity to risk manage some of the best traders in the business at Refco. This was a high-pressure environment where he had to simultaneously monitor all the major markets and up to 40 trading accounts at a time. At one point in the risk room there were 28 screens for two people. He then went on to run the live floor at Schneider, where there were around 144 traders. This was at the height of the prop trading boom. Over this period Steve had unparalleled access to the thoughts and strategies of some of the best traders around. He saw some common traits of success and also, more importantly, failure. Putting all this knowledge to use, Steve's next move was to start trading from home. Then, after a few years of lonely but successful trading, he decided that there was more to life. He decided to turn his hand to education and teamed up with InterTrader (intertrader.com) to become their chief market strategist and head of education. "Those who can, do; those who can't teach," the saying goes. Steve decided to prove he could do both, in real time with real money. Since 2010, Steve has presented nearly 1000 webinars on all aspects of trading and he has traded at over 150 live events, demonstrating how to make money in real market situations. The reality of intraday trading

This is a great book. It is easy to read and explains very well Steve's ideas and trading methodology. It is direct and straight to the point. It helps retail traders realise where they are in relation to the market and to the professional trader. It stresses the importance of a professional approach to retail trading. There are no crazy promises made about unattainable returns. The book teaches a logical approach to trading and the weighting between technical and fundamental trading. There is also a refreshing attitude to risk reward and stop losses which differs from the majority of conventional teaching.

Given the adult nature of this book, I will not review it detail, within a public forum, such as this. This book is erotica and deals with sexual issues. Within this context, some of the scenes do have elements of S&M. This can include spanking, birching and the like, as well as bondage. If you like English style Victorian erotica, don't miss this book.

The hottest piece of victorian erotica ever. The book deals
with the main character from the first 2 books in the series. He meets up with a woman and they open a "boarding and finishing" school where young girls are sent for very special kinds of learning. If you thought Anne Rice's Beauty series of books was hot, Man with a Maid: Book Three, will melt your fingers and your eyes.

Book one in this series is takes a while to get started, but is pretty good. Book two is a yawn. Book three is action from the start and never lets up.

I have to say that I read this book many years ago as a teenager and found it riveting. It was actually referred to as the bible at school by students.
Unfortunately it was lost somewhere along the way. Would love to get another copy but it has been out of print for some years.
If you can get your hands on it you will find it far superior to the other Man and a Maid books in the series.

About the Author
ANDREW BEYER thoroughly revolutionized handicapping when he created his “Beyer Speed Figures,” a measure of how fast a horse has run in a given race, and an indispensable tool for horseplayers. Making the necessary calculations to develop a set of figures for each horse in each race was too time-consuming for most horseplayers, so in 1992 the Daily Racing Form commissioned Beyer and his associates to provide his speed figures for every horse competing in North America. Beyer has been a columnist for the Washington Post since 1978, and contributes regularly to the Daily Racing Form. He is considered one of the leading experts on horse racing.

this is a good book to start with

If you want to improve your luck at the track, this is a good book to start with. Although the author claims that there is no sure way to pick em, he does explain all the deciding factors. I liked his stories (his experience and others'). If you want to get serious about playing the track, it takes comparative and analytical decision-making. And this author shows you how to analyze horses' track records - with lots of examples (which i liked). It's a good read (just for the stories alone) and you don't have to read the chapters sequentially. It's a good "reference" book too.

moving, pitiless, beautiful

this is my favourite book of all time. i came across it accidentally in Croydon library when I was 20 years old, i loved it then, and i love it now, 20 years later. i read other works of hers (and I think she is an amazing writer) and her biography (by Carole Angier - also utterly brilliant and very highly recommended) - but Voyage in the Dark is still my favourite.
Why this is is hard to say. There is something about the prose style - concise, clear but dreamlike. The subject matter - a woman alone in the world written with a pitiless observation. The themes, loss of innocence, the struggle for survival, the loss of love - all beautifully written.
Carole Angier analyses all this far better than I ever could - if you love literature the chances are (man or woman) you will love this work. I do recommend it, and others works by Rhys, and her definitive biography by Carole Angiers.

Discovered too late

This is an enjoyable, if short, early novel by the once forgotten British writer, Jean Rhys, who’s celebrated, Wide Sargasso Sea, contains the same inspiration that of her upbringing in the Caribbean.

Essentially autobiographical, she tells the story of Anna Morgan, a 19 year old girl, recently arrived in London from Dominica (Rhys was born and raised on the small Caribbean island of Dominica). Evoking a penurious existence of cold London bed sits, surrounded by bleak fog and bad food. (Unsurprising as Dominica is famed for its lush habitat, “The Nature Island of the Caribbean”).

She relates the people that Anna encounters who invariably are sexually predatory men, selfish and jealous women and cold hearted relatives. But Anna is also a callow youth, cold towards everyone she meets and so I couldn’t relate to her, but mainly as she acted impulsively and without reason.

However, this novel was ahead of its time in describing the alienation of a newly arrived emigrant and also the situation and plight of women when sick or unemployed. In the absence of a social welfare system, Rhys portrays the women who relied on finding a man to look after them, and also the men who used them for their ends.

Apart form this I personally wouldn’t buy this book on its own despite it having some insights into the world of London and a woman’s place in it at a certain time period. I don’t think it’s a fully appreciated work unless read together with those of her other earlier novels, perhaps as part of a collected works series.

Decadent, Dissolute, Desolate

A stern warning to my teenage son: Stay clear of wistful waifs who exude sexy depression and masochistic neediness, especially if they seem to be talented with words; you won't like yourself in the novel they write about you.

Certainly Ford Madox Ford, a great unhappy writer on his own hook, would second that advice after reading the portrayal of his relationship with Jean Rhys in her second novel, Quartet. Rhys's first four novels - Voyage in the Dark, Quartet, After Leaving Mr. Mackensie, and Good Morning Midnight - are all essentially chapters in her self-excoriating semi-autobiography, the agonizing tale of her life-spiral into degradation and suicidal depression. As a pretty-but-not-beautiful young white girl from the Afro-Caribbean island of Dominica, our heroine takes one step toward shaping her life by de-exiling herself to England. From that step on, it's all adrift, from sexual exploitation (two-way) to exploitation, grimmer and grimier with each episode. She's a sad, sick kitty, this self-hating waif. She also writes with a poignant, painful realism that was way ahead of her time (the 1920s in London and Paris) in terms of confessional literature. There's something in almost every chapter of Rhy's fictionalized desolation that makes me want to run a few miles in the hills, take a cold shower, and listen to a Bach cantata to revitalize myself. There's also something so honest in her that I come back for more desperation on the page.

That's not what I expected when I bought the complete novels. I'd just spent two weeks in Dominica, hiking, snorkling, bird-watching on that beautiful volcanic cone of an island, where equal parts are blended of pitiful colonial detritus and indomitable Black joyousness. I'd never read a word of Rhys, but I noticed a shabby house with her name on a plaque in Roseau, the mildewed rubble-heap that passes for a port city. I expected something on the order of Jamaica Kincaid, or even better, the early hilarious novels of VS Naipaul. Ooo-wee, was I on the wrong track!

I seldom urge people to read depressing novels or down-hearted poems. The world has a way of supplying each of us as much despair as we need. Rhys is an exception. Her sorrow is so pure than it exonerates her degraded life. I haven't read her last novel yet - Wide Sargasso Sea, written 30 years later and considered her masterpiece - but I will. If ever a life required a redemption, it was Jean Rhys's.

About the Author
Arseny Alexandrovich Tarkovsky was born in the Ukrainian city of Elisavetgrad (now Kirovohrad) in 1907 and moved to Moscow in 1923, working as a newspaper journalist and publishing his first poems. By the late 1930s, he had become a noted translator of Turkmen, Georgian, Armenian, Arabic, and other Asian poets. During the Second World War, he served as a war correspondent for the Soviet Army publication Battle Alarm from 1942 to 1944, receiving the Order of the Red Star for valor. Tarkovsky's first volume of his own poems, Before the Snow, emerged in 1962, when the poet was 55, and rapidly sold out. His fame widened when his son, the internationally-acclaimed filmmaker Andrei Tarkovsky, included some of his father's poems in his films. He died in 1989, just before the Soviet Union fell.

Philip Metres is the author or translator of a number of books and chapbooks including SAND OPERA (Alice James Books, 2015), COMPLEAT CATALOGUE OF COMEDIC NOVELTIES: POETIC TEXTS OF LEV RUBINSTEIN (Ugly Duckling Presse, 2014), A Concordance of Leaves (Diode Press, 2013), abu ghraib arias (Flying Guillotine Press, 2011), TO SEE THE EARTH (Cleveland State University Poetry Center, 2008), and Behind the Lines: War Resistance Poetry on the American Homefront Since 1941 (University of Iowa Press, 2007). His work has garnered two NEA fellowships, the Thomas J. Watson Fellowship, five Ohio Arts Council Grants, the Beatrice Hawley Award, two Arab American Book Awards, the Cleveland Arts Prize, the Anne Halley Prize, the PEN/Heim Translation grant, a Russian Institute for Literary Translation grant, and the Creative Workforce Fellowship. He is a professor of English at John Carroll University in Cleveland.

Dimitri Psurtsev, a Russian poet and translator of British and American authors, is a professor at Moscow State Linguistic University and lives outside Moscow with his wife Natalia and daughter Anna. His two books of poetry, Ex Roma Tertia and Tengiz Notepad, were published in 2001 by Yelena Pakhomova Press and translations of his poems were published by the Hudson Review in 2009 and 2011. In 2014 Dimitri received, along with Philip Metres, a PEN/Heim Translation Fund grant for I BURNED AT THE FEAST: SELECTED POEMS OF ARSENY TARKOVSKY.

Excellent anthology of poems by one of Russia's finest (and arguably most underrated) poets!

Historically, Arseny Tarkovsky's poems have had limited exposure in the English language. Though widely known and highly regarded as a great poet in Russia and the former Soviet Union, he is less well-known in the West. His work, nostalgic, spiritual, emotional, and deeply moving, arguably deserves greater exposure in the English-speaking world. This new anthology of selected poems, translated by Philip Metres and Dimitri Psurtsev, not only fills that need but surpasses it with this fantastic and accessible bilingual volume of Tarkovsky's poetry. The translations, which capture the feeling, essence, rhythm, and depth of Tarkovsky's words as best English can, are superb and it is a great treat to see them side-by-side with the original Russian-language texts. The collection is complemented by an excellent afterward by Metres on translating. Overall, it is truly a work jam-packed with so many beautiful words and so much excellent material that it astounds one to think that it is only just over 200 pages long! It is certainly a must-have addition to the library of any serious Slavicist or scholar of Russian poetry.

The first edition of 3D Game Engine Design was an international bestseller that sold over 17,000 copies and became an industry standard. In the six years since that book was published, graphics hardware has evolved enormously. About the Author
Dave Eberly is the president of Geometric Tools, Inc. (www.geometrictools.com), a company that specializes in software development for computer graphics, image analysis, and numerical methods. Previously, he was the director of engineering at Numerical Design Ltd. (NDL), the company responsible for the real-time 3D game engine, NetImmerse. He also worked for NDL on Gamebryo, which was the next-generation engine after NetImmerse. His background includes a BA degree in mathematics from Bloomsburg University, MS and PhD degrees in mathematics from the University of Colorado at Boulder, and MS and PhD degrees in computer science from the University of North Carolina at ChapelHill. He is the author of 3D Game Engine Design, 2nd Edition (2006), 3D Game Engine Architecture (2005), Game Physics (2004), and coauthor with Philip Schneider of Geometric Tools for Computer Graphics (2003), all published by Morgan Kaufmann. As a mathematician, Dave did research in the mathematics of combustion, signal and image processing, and length-biased distributions in statistics. He was an associate professor at the University of Texas at San Antonio with an adjunct appointment in radiology at the U.T. Health Science Center at San Antonio. In 1991, he gave up his tenured position to re-train in computer science at the University of North Carolina. After graduating in 1994, he remained for one year as a research associate professor in computer science with a joint appointment in the Department of Neurosurgery, working in medical image analysis. His next stop was the SAS Institute, working for a year on SAS/Insight, a statistical graphics package. Finally, deciding that computer graphics and geometry were his real calling, Dave went to work for NDL (which is now Emergent Game Technologies), then to Magic Software, Inc., which later became Geometric Tools, Inc. No Design Here, Only Math. Kindle e-book Has Errors in Equations.

3D Game Engine Design: A Practical Approach to Real-Time Computer Graphics by David H. Eberly was an quite a read, at slightly over 1,000 pages. However, after a few chapters in I was already getting fatigued and I really had to push my way to the end. That’s not to say that the book was bad, it was not, however it was nothing like what I expected. Let me explain.

Imagine you walk into a restaurant and sit down with a friend. After several minutes of thought, you decide to order a steak. The waiter comes, takes your order, and about 15 minutes later returns with a plate. Except when you go to eat, you realize he has brought you a grilled chicken instead. It’s not that grilled chicken tastes bad, it’s just not what you ordered. I feel the same way about this book. The title says: 3D Game Engine Design: A Practical Approach to Real-Time Computer Graphics, however there is very little to no design in the book, it’s not very practical, and there is not much coverage of computer graphics itself.

But at 1,000+ pages there must be some information in there, and indeed there is. However, it is almost 99% math. I don’t have a problem with math. What I do have a problem with is pages and pages of mathematical proofs, when an explanation of an algorithm would have sufficed. The math is just really heavy, and made even harder to follow due to formatting errors on the Kindle e-book. For example, some symbols would be replaced by squares, making them almost impossible to decipher. In addition, most of the equations and formula were images, but some were too small to read and difficult to click on. Again, making it hard to follow. For a technical book this is all but unacceptable, and makes it next to useless to base an implementation on. I found many times I was reading 2 or 3 pages into a proof and I just would forget what the formula was even calculating. It’s not that I am slow. I have read other 3D math books and had a good time. The explanations here are just somewhat lacking and dry.

The main gripe I have is that the design of a game engine is nowhere to be found. You would expect overviews of class structures, game loops, how to communicate between objects, event systems, scene graphs, encapsulation of graphical APIs, input abstraction, etc. Nope, not here. It’s not even until the end of the book, in chapter 18, that he even mentions OOP. Most of that chapter is general OOP concepts (that you expect anyone that made it that far into a book like this already knows) and at the end sub-chapter the author goes into some topics that I would consider game engine design focused.

Fine, but surely there is something to like. I will say that the coverage of certain aspects of core math of an engine were covered in-depth. Specifically, bounding volumes, collision/intersection detection, and distance testing were given good coverage. Just looking at the table of contents is deceiving because it appears that much more is covered. For example, there is a chapter on physics, yet it is only about 20 pages and is not very helpful at all. Only in the last chapter was really any graphical concepts covered and, again, it was brief and only scratched the surface.

I’m not sure what David Eberly, the author, is trying to do here. This is the second book of his I read, and I had the same complaints about that. The book was mislabeled and deceptive. Had he just titled it “Game Engine Mathematics” I would have been a lot happier. Granted, I may have purchased the book anyway, but at least I would have known what I was getting into. I wanted a design book, I purchased what I thought was a design book, and all I got were a bunch of mathematical proofs. Sorry, I am disappointed.

If you are looking do research on 3D math then there are better, more approachable, books out there. See 3D Math Primer for Graphics and Game Development, by Fletcher Dunn and Ian Parberry or Mathematics for 3D Game Programming and Computer Graphics, by Eric Lengyel. If you want a game engine design book then Game Engine Architecture by Jason Gregory has a great overview and 3D Game Engine Programming by Stefan Zerbst is better for implementation. Honestly, there could be more books in this field. Unfortunately, 3D Game Engine Design doesn’t fill it’s own shoes.

rare good read in game dev

If you are designing an engine you need this book. Yes things have changed greatly in graphics but It offers insight on the thought behind a real working engine. Not just theory. There's a million ways to make an engine and his may not be the best but understanding the thought process helps improve and save time on what you are working on. This is more about low level engine design vs graphics (like advanced lighting) 4 stars because only because some topics he dives into aren't his forte or perhaps not enough time and would have best been left out.

Pretty good

This book comes with the author's own 3d engine, and the book itself is like extremely detailed documentation about how the engine is put together and why. This is both a good thing and a bad.

The good part is that he walks through the entire engine, piece by piece, and explains in detail how it works and why it was built that way.

The bad part is that in some sections, you get a very narrow view of how to build that piece of the engine. There are many alternative ways to do some of these things, and they're not explored as much.

Overall though, I find the book very good.
