A Convicting and Challenging Call for the Church to Engage

I am grateful for HarperCollins for sending me an advance copy of Dr. R. Albert Mohler’s new We Cannot Be Silent. The book has already gained a lot of attention from news media outlets like The Courier-Journal, USA Today, and The Huffington Post just to name a few. Unfortunately, most media outlets have only focused on the final chapter of the book which essentially is a Q&A chapter covering multiple issues. The final chapter though, is not the essence or point of the book…it is simply a Q&A in which Mohler tackles very difficult questions. While many are only focusing on a few answers from Mohler (comprising of 3 pages out of 200!) what the news media is not doing is focusing on the main argument, or point of the book.

While Mohler gracefully and compassionately answers tough questions about whether or not a Christian can celebrate and attend a same-sex wedding, the essence of his book is not boycott, ridicule, judge, or hate. The essence of Mohler’s book is compassion. A call for Christians to repent of their distorted views of marriage, sex, and reproduction, and to return to the truths found within the Bible. Christians should not distance themselves from those in the LGBT (or whatever acronym is being used) crowd, but to compassionately engage them with the Gospel. This will require Christians to have a firm understanding of where our country is, how we got here, where we are going, and how we have failed in many ways concerning these issues.

It would have been easy for Mohler to appeal to the to the “Extreme-Right” and make this book a battle cry to “take back” what has been lost concerning marriage. The book would have probably been more popular (unfortunately) if that was Mohler’s agenda, but it is not. Mohler writes specifically to pastors and leaders within Christianity, but the book is applicable for all Christians (and spoiler…I recommend this book as a MUST read for all pastors and leaders but essentially Mohler’s book is a must read for ALL Christians). Mohler’s message to Christians is to repent and be compassionate.

In the Preface Mohler states “This book is about this moral revolution, how it happened and what it means for us, for our churches, and for our children. It is important to trace the revolution and understand that the most heated controversies of our day did not emerge from a vacuum onto the daily headlines. Every revolution has a story, and the story of this revolution is one that we can now trace. To put the truth plainly, this revolution did not start with same-sex marriage, and it will not end there. (xi-xii)…This book is written in hope that the church will be found faithful, even in the midst of the storm (xv).”

Quite frankly, the church has failed to have a biblical view of sex, marriage, and reproduction for a long time. We should not be surprised at the progression our country has taken. Chapter 1 explains exactly where our country is…in the midst of a moral and sexual revolution in which anyone opposed to the new way of thinking is demonized for beliefs that have been held by societies for over two thousand years (and more). This chapter elevates the seriousness of our situation and looks at the heart of the issue and not just the symptoms.

Chapter 2 is a fascinating chapter in which Mohler explains how the development of birth control and contraceptions, divorce (specifically no-fault divorce), advanced reproductive technologies, and cohabitation have set the stage for the arrival of same-sex marriages. While the church mostly ignored these issues (instead focusing on lesser issues) the progression for our current day was already set in stone many decades ago. The language and terminology used in major court decisions concerning these issues paved the way to how our courts have made recent decisions.

In Chapter 3 the developments of the homosexual movement is put within the context of that moral revolution and in Chapter 4 Dr. Mohler takes a closer look at same-sex marriage itself. Mohler states “Discovering how this happened is essential for Christians who are trying to live faithfully on the other side of this moral revolution (33).” Again Mohler’s work in these two chapters is very fascinating. He pinpoints a key book entitled “After the Ball: How America Will Conquer Its Fear & Hatred of Gays in the 90s” by Marshall Kirk and Hunter Madsen in which the quintessential strategy for what became a gay-rights revolution was laid out. Of course that strategy alone could not have been successful without the significant help of liberal Bible scholars, theologians, and religious leaders who declare that the church was in error and needed changing.

Mohler comments (and rightly so) “At this point, we must respond with a sobering reality that America has never been nearly as Christian as many conservative Christians have claimed (43).” The false idea that America is or ever was a “Christian” nation hopefully has been dismissed. While certainly there are some aspects of Christianity at the heart of our constitution there are also Deistic and other principles found as well. Instead of fighting for ideologies or false understandings of our nations past, Christians need to make the Gospel their primary effort in spreading

Next, in Chapters 5 and 6 Mohler discusses the transgender revolution, the early affects we are seeing, the progression we are on, and how the church should respond. Again, Mohler encourages compassion and awareness while also affirming the Gospel can change anyone in any situation. Mohler then goes on in the next chapter to describe how the progression we are currently on essentially means the end of marriage. Again Mohler emphasizes that damage done by heterosexuals has caused the current crisis.

Concerning gay families Mohler makes a tough, but much needed statement when he says, “… we must always be ready to state publicly our gladness that children are cared for, even as we assert the deficiencies of the home in which these adopted children find greater security, love, nurture, and comfort. This will require Christians to form a more mature and theologically sustainable arguments than we have brought to the public square in the past. Frankly, we will make fools of ourselves if we suggest that it would be better for children to be cosigned to the anonymous social welfare system, with little hope of eventual rescue, then to be adopted by homosexual parents who deeply desire to invest themselves in the are and nurturing of children (93).” That does not mean that we forget and continue to fight for the true context of human flourishing (within a husband and wife relationship), but that we do so with compassion and biblical conviction.

Next, in Chapter 7 Dr. Mohler does a brief biblical theology of sex. Though brief, this chapter is filled with solid biblical exposition. In this chapter Mohler corrects new and wrong interpretations that are taken out of context in order to blur and excuse sin. He rightly states that, “In the end the church will either declare the truth of God’s Word, or it will find a way to run away from it. It ultimately comes down to trust. Do we trust the Bible to tell us truthfully what God desires and commands about sexuality (118)?”

In Chapter 8 Mohler explains the issue between religious liberty verses erotic liberty and how those fighting for erotic liberty are essentially arguing for the end of religious liberty. Instead, those who speak in opposition to the moral revolution are declared to be making “hate speech” and erotic liberty is trumping religious liberty and freedom of speech. Mohler states, “Even while religious liberty is supposedly recognized and affirmed, it is often being transformed and minimized…President Obama himself, has shifted his language from “freedom of religion” to “freedom of worship” (127). While the difference seems subtle it is profound. Worship is restricted to the confines of a building while religion can be practiced in the public sphere. “Freedom of worship essentially muzzles the Christian in the public square.”

Finally, Chapter 9 is a profound and biblical call for Christians to repent of our failures and sins and to compassionately be obedient to the Great Commission. Mohler specifically notes how evangelicals have sinned against homosexuals “by speaking carelessly about the true nature of their sin (143).” Mohler mentions several other ways that evangelicals have sinned against homosexuals…again calling for repentance and change. As mentioned before, media outlets have completely missed the point of this book. While Chapter 10 is a Tour de France of answering tough questions, Mohler is not advocating boycotting or abandoning or running away from the culture issues that are present. Mohler rightly calls for Christians to compassionately engage our culture with the gospel.

This is a must read for church leaders, members, pastors…every Christian should read this book from Dr. R. Albert Mohler. Critics would be wise to read the book in it’s entirety, instead of blatantly taking a small portion of it out of context. I think even they will be challenged by what they find.

Silence Kills!

Postmodern culture is drowning in relativism and religious pluralism. The rising tide of liberalism and theological compromise has not only washed upon the secular shore; it has come crashing in upon the evangelical church with the force of a tsunami.

Dr. R. Albert Mohler explores this rising cultural storm in his new book, We Cannot Be Silent. The author describes the so-called sexual revolution in vivid terms; terms that sober readers and awaken them to this escalating challenge.

Mohler explains that this cultural revolution did not begin with same-sex marriage, however. Rather, four developments helped usher in the redefinition of marriage, namely, birth control and contraception, divorce, advanced reproductive technologies, and cohabitation.

The author guides readers through the various stages of cultural decay which include the acceptance of same-sex marriage, the transgender revolution, and the collapse of marriage.

Dr. Mohler provides the proper paradigm for thinking and acting biblically in these troubling times:

The fundamental axiom upon which evangelical Christians must base every response to homosexuality is this: God alone is sovereign, and he alone created the universe and everything within it by his own design and for his own good pleasure. Furthermore, he showed us his creative intention through Holy Scripture – and that intention is clearly to create and establish two distinct but complementary genders or sexes. The Genesis narrative demonstrates that this distinction of genders is neither accidental nor inconsequential to the divine design.

Navigating the cultural decay is no simple task, especially when more and more people appear to accept what the Bible prohibits – even in the church. Thankfully, we have the Word of God which reveals the heart of God in these matters. Indeed, the biblical testimony is clear and compelling: Mohler adds:

Homosexuality is a sin against God and a direct rejection of God’s intention and command in creation. All sin is a matter of eternal consequence. The redemption accomplished by Jesus Christ is the only hope for sinners. On the cross, Jesus paid the price for our sins and served as a substitute for the redeemed.

We Cannot Be Silent is essential reading for Christian leaders, Christian educators, and pastors. It contains a wealth of practical information, biblical responses, and draws readers into the center of the cultural tsunami. Mohler offers hope and Bible-soaked counsel for Christians who seek answers in the midst of the storm.

But the most important aspect of the author’s book is his heart which is clearly revealed. Mohler strikes a critical balance of love and grace from start to finish. He helps readers navigate the challenging waters of postmodern culture with biblical wisdom, skill, and winsomeness. Such an approach is imperative if the church intends on reaching people for the sake of the gospel.

I applaud We Cannot Be Silent for its depth, transparency, and clear commitment to Scripture. It deserves a wide reading and is bound to make an important difference in the lives of many people.

Speaking the Truth in Love!

How do you explain the American sexual revolution that has been taking place since the sixties? And what is the Christian church to do about it? These are important questions for us to ask. If you want thoughtful and informed answers to these questions, you’ll want to get Albert Mohler’s new book, We Cannot Be Silent (Nashville: Nelson Books, 2015). The subtitle shows the aim of the book: “Speaking truth to a culture redefining sex, marriage, and the very meaning of right and wrong.” In just over 200 pages, Mohler does a nice job explaining the sexual revolution, critiquing it from a Christian perspective, and offering constructive advice for how the church should move forward in the midst of this revolution. It is a timely book for sure!

Chapter one is a discussion of how the sexual revolution has affected culture. Chapter two is a study of how the revolution has negatively affected marriage and family. In chapters three and four, Mohler discusses homosexuality and transgender issues. The next chapter (five) is a study of the changing and ultimately the end of marriage. Chapter eight is a summary of Scripture’s teaching on sexuality, while chapter nine has to do with religious freedom. Chapters nine and ten talk about how the gospel addresses sexuality and some major questions that arise from the topic of the sexual revolution. The conclusion of the book is a response to the recent Supreme Court decision on gay marriage.

One reason why I appreciated this book is because it clearly explained how the current sexual mess this nation is in finds its roots in the past – before the nineties – back to the sixties and before. The gay marriage and transgender issues didn’t arise in the last five years out of a vacuum. Mohler speaks well to this issue. The book was also helpful in that Mohler did a nice job of explaining how deep and wide this sexual revolution has spread in our culture: it affects so many things, from high school sports to the military to tax laws to doctor’s offices to elementary school bathrooms. The sexual revolution is a major movement that the church has to face; we cannot be silent!

Mohler doesn’t just point fingers in this book; in fact, he doesn’t really point fingers in the bad sense of the term at all. He examines, diagnoses, explains, and even notes that the Christian church has not always handled this revolution well. So he gives a loving response on how we should go about dealing with the sexual revolution in a way that’s faithful to Scripture (in justice) but also radiates with love (in mercy).

There is a lot of info in this book! If you’re looking for a quick and light read, this is not it! However, if you want a readable, yet reasonably in-depth look at the sexual revolution from a Christian perspective, please, get this book: We Cannot Be Silent. It will be a help to the church as we stand on the truth of God, and speak it – with love!

This Series is "The" Reference for Stamp Collectors

The Scott Postage Stamp Catalog Sections (the 7 major ones) are THE references
for stamp collectors and sellers alike. I update my volumes only every few
years,as the newest volumes are expensive for the individual (they are
available in many library collections though). Used volumes 1-2 years old
are attractively priced and should satisfy most individual collectors
(retail stamp prices are somewhat out of date,but this is somewhat true
for the newest volumes,although less so). With my acquisition of the 2011
set (updating my 2001-2 volumes) I was delighted to see that all the stamp
illustrations are now in color (and there are many of them). The catalogs
are invaluable in identifying stamps-particularly those from countries whose
language is unfamiliar. They also can provide both history and
a geography lessons. Each stamp,whether pictured or not has a subject
title and color scheme given for it. Finally,the advertisements within
each volume can be helpful in identifying stamp dealers.

My purchase was just as good as buying the item new and much cheaper

I didn't realize these books were available in 'used' condition. They are quite expensive to buy new therefore my husband only purchased this particular Volome about every 5 years. Now that he has passed on and I am in the process of evaluating his collection for auction this more recent issue is a great help to me.

Jared Diamond states the theme of his book up-front: "How the human species changed, within a short time, from just another species of big mammal to a world conqueror; and how we acquired the capacity to reverse all that progress overnight." The Third Chimpanzee is, in many ways, a prequel to Diamond's prize-winning Guns, Germs, and Steel. While Guns examines "the fates of human societies," this work surveys the longer sweep of human evolution, from our origin as just another chimpanzee a few million years ago. Diamond writes:

It's obvious that humans are unlike all animals. It's also obvious that we're a species of big mammal down to the minutest details of our anatomy and our molecules. That contradiction is the most fascinating feature of the human species.

The chapters in The Third Chimpanzee on the oddities of human reproductive biology were later expanded in Why Is Sex Fun? Here, they're linked to Diamond's views of human psychology and history.

Diamond is officially a physiologist at UCLA medical school, but he's also one of the best birdwatchers in the world. The current scientific consensus that "primitive" humans created ecological catastrophes in the Pacific islands, Australia, and the New World owes a great deal to his fieldwork and insight. In Diamond's view, the current global ecological crisis isn't due to modern technology per se, but to basic weaknesses in human nature. But, he says, "I'm cautiously optimistic. Research biologist (Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands) Diamond argues that the human being is just a third species of chimpanzee but nevertheless a unique animal essentially due to its capacity for innovation, which caused a great leap forward in hominoid evolution. After stressing the significance of spoken language, along with art and technology, Diamond focuses on the self-destructive propensities of our species to kill each other (genocide and drug abuse) and to destroy the environment (mass extinctions). He also discusses human sexuality, geographic variability, and ramifications of agriculture (metallurgy, cultivated plants, and domesticated animals). Absent from Diamond's work is the role religion plays in causing both war and the population explosion as well as long-range speculations on the future of our species. This informative, most fascinating, and very readable book is highly recommended for all libraries.

Plenty of provocative ideas in this grand sweep of evolutionary biology and anthropology: not surprising for this MacArthur ``genius'' Award-winner, Natural History columnist, and UCLA Medical School physiology professor. With only 1.6 percent difference between the human genome and the genomes of two species of chimps, Diamond declares that we should call ourselves ``the third chimpanzee.'' (Curiously, he fails to mention neoteny as making a world of genetic difference.) Diamond first reviews human evolution, ending with the great leap forward that he attributes to language. New in this area is a discussion of animal art and communication (e.g., bowerbird constructions, vervet-monkey talk) and creolization (the development of sophisticated human languages from pidgin forms). With respect to other human features, Diamond reprises all the theories you've ever heard about sexual behavior, selection, menstruation, menopause, etc. Ditto for aging. He steers a common- sense course between extremes, opting for the games-theory approach of optimizing one's genes and of group survival. Old-but-not- fertile elders are essential imparters of knowledge for the group. A chapter on self-destructive behaviors (smoking, drinking, drug abuse) offers the peculiar theory that we do it to advertise that we are really superior because we can flaunt handicaps! No mention is made of the fit of the chemicals to receptors in the brain and to circuits evoking pleasure. Later, drawing on his special knowledge of New Guinea, Australia, and Polynesia, and his research on birds, Diamond provides a fascinating if overwhelmingly pessimistic view of human predation through genocide, species and resource destruction, and potential nuclear disaster. Conclusions of continued human, species, and planetary destruction are inescapable, in spite of Diamond's optimism that we can learn from the past and some modest success he has had with conservation programs. On language, a Diamond in the rough

There are so many reviews here that I have not been able to read all of them. However, several have adequately covered the main points of the book, so I won't do so here. Instead, I am reviewing one portion of the book, that dealing with language, in particular chapter 8, "Bridges to Human Language," but also other, related pages.

I have given his discussion of human language three stars because of its over reliance on English, or languages like English, as "the" default language of all languages. (To understand my criticism, I will need to give some "grammar" explanations below. Please bear with me.)

We get a hint of this dependence on mainly European languages on page 56, where he refers to our ability to "perfect" language with such things as "word order and case endings and tenses." Tenses refer to the way we change verbs to refer to different times and conditions in time, the so-called present, past, and future. For example, in English we say "I go," "I went," "I will go". For many verbs in English, we mark the past tense by adding -ed at the end. (In British English, some verbs add a final -t, like "learnt".) Many languages have this kind of verb changing feature, as anyone who has studied French, German, or Spanish knows. But not all languages note time by changing or marking the verb. Chinese and Vietnamese, for example, do not, and they get along quite nicely without them.

The second item Diamond notes are case endings; these refer mainly to the way languages mark things like who the speaker is, who receives something, who owns something, and so on. It's funny Diamond should select case endings as an example of "perfecting" a language, because English has all but eliminated them in the last 500 years. The closest we have are pronouns like I, me, my, and mine.

As for word order, over 90% of the world's languages that have been studied have a dominant word order, but about 10% do not. The word order of English, Subject-Verb-Object (SVO), can be found in about 40% of languages. (SVO example: She reads the newspaper in the morning.) Slightly more languages put the verb at the end (SOV). Japanese and Korean are examples of that word order.

On page 153, Diamond goes on to add things like "prefixes, suffixes, and changes in word roots" to his list of what he thinks make up "grammar."

Given that so many languages do NOT fit Diamond's prescription for "perfected" human languages, we have to wonder how he could have made the assumptions about language that he did. We get a clue on page 155 where he speaks of his encounter with Fore, a "deliciously complex" language spoken on New Guinea. From page 156, though, we discover that his encounter with "creole" and "pidgin" languages were what convinced him that English was the paradigm. Actually, he got his idea from Derek Bickerton, a student of Noam Chomsky who took Chomsky's idea of "universal grammar" to mean a single, default setting for all languages, the way English is the "default" setting of Microsoft Word. Bickerton came to his conclusion after studying a language that grew up in Hawaii during the late 19th century when workers in the cane fields and pineapple fields from many different countries had to work out a way to communicate with each other. What they came up with was a "pidgin," a simplified language that took bits from here and there. Later, their children made it into a working language with its own definite structure. Diamond, following Bickerton, believed that because the rich, white, English-speaking owners of the plantations didn't mix with the farm laborers it would have been impossible for the children to have acquired or picked up the English pattern of SVO. Yet, they came up this word order! Amazing. How could it have happened?

According to Diamond/Bickerton, all languages are basically SVO, and anything else is a variation on that. Unfortunately, such a thesis doesn't explain how the largest group of languages in the world are SOV, and not SVO. A closer look at the languages that the children's parents spoke gives a more likely explanation: Enough workers already spoke an SVO language to begin with, languages like Portuguese, Spanish, and Chinese. It is also not impossible for the kids growing up to have become familiar with English.

Although Diamond says he doesn't "want to exaggerate" and imply that creoles are all "essentially the same" (page 162), he does just that in the following pages. Most damning is his argument that "creoles derived from languages with a different word order...use the subject-verb-object order" (163). When I first read this, I scribbled in the margin, "Name one." He doesn't. And there don't seem to be any. As linguist Asya Pereltsvaig writes, "[We] know of no [spoken] creole whose substrate and superstrate languages were both non-SVO" (Languages of the World, page 241).

Turning real languages on their head and making SVO creole languages the "default," Diamond then goes on to bumble around with preposterous claims about English, including that of his own children! His first stumble comes when he discusses questions. True, many languages do not change word order when they ask a question (page 164). For example, "You want juice" can be a statement about what you want, and it can also be a question, "You want juice?" Although we often change word order, English can use the same structure. We accomplish this by changing our sentence intonation--our voice goes up at the end. According to Diamond, English "does not treat questions in this way." But, as I have just shown, we do. We do it all the time. True, we have other ways of asking questions--"Do you want juice?"--but we are not limited by some rule of school boy grammar that Diamond thinks we slavishly follow.

Diamond isn't satisfied with that example. He gives us next, "Where are you?" This, he says, inverts the subject and the verb. But it does much more than that: It puts the "object" at the start of the sentence, turning it into OSV! He contrasts "Where are you?" with "Where you are?", some imaginary language, I guess. Take real languages like Chinese and Vietnamese. They don't put the "where" up front. They put it at the end: "You are where." Now, any simpleton can comprehend this as a question, but just for confirmation those two languages can add a "question" particle at the end.

As it turns out, English also has "where you are," but it's not a question. It's a subordinate clause. For instance, your friend/child calls you to pick them up but there's too much noise on the other end when they say where they are. Instead of asking "where are you?" you can say, "Sorry, I can't hear where you are. Say it again." Here, the clause "where you are" is an OSV clause that serves as the "object" of the main verb.

I hope readers are not too annoyed by all this minute grammar talk, but it just goes to show that English is really complex and can accomplish many communicative purposes in a number of ways. Yet all languages have such power.

To sum up, my point in this review is that Diamond has greatly over simplified matters through an over reliance on a poorly attested hypothesis. There really is no good ground for trying to make all of the world's languages subordinate to English--or, one step removed, "the creole word order." The SVO order of creole languages is largely influenced by the membership of an SVO language in the mix. In the last four or five hundred years of European colonialism, it would be a surprise if creoles did not form using this major option. To the list of Guns, Germs, and Steel, we should add language.

Same book - different titles

What I fail to see mentioned in any of the reviews thus far is the fact that this book (`The Third Chimpanzee') is essentially identical to a previous version under a different title by Jared Diamond, namely," The Rise and Fall of the Third Chimpanzee: How Our Animal Heritage Affects the Way We Live" circa 1991. Interestingly, the reviews of that book (`The Rise and Fall') also fails to mention that it is a previous version of this updated book (`The Third Chimpanzee'). Upon comparison, the differences appear to be quite minimal; the general thrust is identical. Nothing about this relationship is mentioned at the Jared Diamond page either. However, please be aware that with very little effort the older version (`The Rise and Fall') can be found in a free PDF format.

Diamond's Best Book

Dr Diamond wrote this wonderful book by describing three themes. First by recapitulating the geographical, rather than the genetic reasons why Europeans have dominated the world, as in his "Guns Germs and Steel", secondly, he describes humanity's impending demise by neglecting the environment as in his "Collapse". And finally, he introduces he describes the new idea that humans share many traits with their closest relatives, chimpanzees. (Though he doesn't seem to understand that one can tell the sex of a chimp just by looking at its humanoid face.)

Preface

Despite the balmy Mediterranean weather, sweat poured off my body—that’s how hard I was training. Heaving with exhaustion, I tackled the final set of burpees. Don’t let the cute name fool you: Burpees are a tough, wildly effective way to blast fat and build lean muscle.

The locals on Malta seemed perplexed by the sight of an eastern European woman in a sports bra with a firm stomach hopping up and down as though the rooftop—where we were filming this workout—were on fire, but I was doing exactly that. I’m sure these witnesses thought I was crazy.

From a standing position, I dropped into a squat and placed my palms on the ground. Without hesitating I kicked my legs back and assumed the top of a push-up position. I performed the push-up, and then, without hesitation, I drew my legs back into the low squat stance, glutes near the ground, before driving my body upward. I dropped into another rep and then another and another. I had no weights, no equipment, no gym, but I was cranking out reps of the most effective exercise that I think you can perform: Burpees work more than 200 muscles during each rep while leaving you gasping for additional oxygen after a set. This may exhaust you, but it helps you grow, and it also helps you feel alive.

My husband at that time, Freddy, recorded the entirety of this workout in Malta. We spent much of our tentative marriage traveling to far-flung locations and filming my daily workouts, posting them on YouTube and our website. The first of these workouts was filmed in Prague, where I was born and raised. Then we moved to Canada, where he was raised. But that day’s workout took place in Malta, where the low cost of living and balmy California-like weather helped us film outdoors. I could take off my sweats and train in my sports bra and shorts, showcasing my abs without freezing off my glutes. At that time, I was in my early twenties, and I didn’t understand how these short workout videos we made would change my life for the better over the following years.

In early 2008, Freddy and I launched our fledgling business BodyRock.tv. We started small—when we launched the first website, I was working in a flower shop owned by my in-laws in Kingston, Ontario, Canada—but still, I was sure that people would like it. I knew it would take a while before the website started to make money, at least a year, but I knew it was going to work. BodyRock.tv started slowly, but then our YouTube channel started growing like crazy. With our short, intense, no-gym-required workouts, Freddy and I were on to a new workout style that people embraced in droves. It took only six months for us to reach one million views.

I based my workouts on moves I could perform anywhere because we couldn’t afford gym memberships. Almost all of the workouts I found online were either bodybuilding style and directed toward men, or yoga-oriented for women. Neither of these suited my goals of burning body fat and adding lean muscle, so I invented my own training style, taking a few elements from an upstart movement called CrossFit, others from Tabata training, and adding my own unique twist to every influence I liked and thought would be effective.

Sure, some of my YouTube viewers were guys tuning in because they liked to watch a woman work out. But women constituted 90 percent of my audience. Despite our remote locations and low-tech approach to making fitness videos, my workout videos became a global fitness sensation. Millions of BodyRockers were doing my workouts every day and posting their fat-loss stories online. So I kept it up; I posted a video of my workouts each day and poured my heart, soul, and sweat out on-camera, making each workout more intense than every other at-home workout program. My fans loved the outdoor setting of the videos we shot in Malta, where we moved to from Canada. Malta helped us in other, unexpected ways. Uploading a video to the Web took six hours on this remote island. The longer the video, the longer it took us to upload it. To save uploading time, my workouts became shorter and more intense, until I distilled them to 15 minutes of fat-burning moves done in nonstop fashion. Rest came only after the workout ended.

I think part of my appeal was that I didn’t bark orders or emphasize counts as some fitness personalities do. I didn’t tell people what to do. I merely performed my workouts from start to finish, grunting and sweating along with viewers who were in it with me every rep of the way. There was a realness to these YouTube workouts that many at-home fitness programs don’t provide.

Canada and Malta seemed worlds apart, but no matter where we traveled, no matter how successful we became, I was always dogged by elements of my past and the threat of scandal. As a young woman living in Prague, I needed to make enough money to free myself from a troubled home life, which led me to make a regrettable decision: I posed nude for photos and video shoots. Like many young, vulnerable women, I found that this decision, once made, was nearly impossible to undo. In the Internet age, the consequences took on a life of their own. I worried that this would sabotage my newfound success once my followers learned about my past.

But something unexpected happened. When the full story of my earlier decisions began to trickle out in the comments sections of video postings, online forums, and other places, my popularity rose even faster. People now knew how much I had overcome. As my followers began to understand who I was and what I’d left behind, they seemed to appreciate me that much more. Most of them hadn’t made the same mistakes I had made, but many of them had made their own mistakes. They identified with the struggles of a young woman trying to find success in our complicated world.

Huge social media followings and YouTube channels like mine drew the attention of large fitness companies. I found myself in Los Angeles meeting with Beachbody, Body by Jake, and other mainstream fitness brands because they had seen my YouTube workouts, and they were responding well to them. Something big was at hand.

My business and marriage were completely intertwined, however, and over the course of several years, that lack of separation doomed the marriage and drove a wedge between my husband and me. As our marriage dissolved, we became disgruntled and awkward business partners; and in the fallout, eventually I lost access to the website. The only thing I walked away with was my image. Rather than wallow in despair, I picked myself up and started over by launching a new website, ZuzkaLight.com. Today, I have surpassed my earlier success thanks to my current followers. Regardless of how you found me, I know that you’re a woman or man taking control of your life by getting in better shape.

All my longtime followers know that I have helped them do this, and that’s what I want to do for you. That’s why I’ve written this book.

Introduction

I’ve often asked myself: Why me? With so many people posting so many workout videos online, why did so many viewers gravitate toward a young girl from the Czech Republic with an accent and no gym equipment? I’ve considered a number of theories, but I think so many people came to my YouTube videos for the workouts because they’re highly effective. This book puts together a program based on these workouts in a novel way. These workouts do more than just burn fat and build muscle; they help unleash the super-fit person who lives inside each and every one of us. My followers learn they are able to perform harder workouts than they ever thought possible. This not only inspires confidence but teaches your muscles and body to learn what it’s like to perform and train at peak levels.

Though at first it wasn’t this clear to me, over time I came to realize that a real fitness philosophy lay behind my ideas and my approach. By using my inner turmoil to push myself harder during my workouts, I was tapping into the importance of high-intensity training. Science has now shown that intensity, along with consistency, is the key to workout success. That’s true from both a performance and an aesthetic perspective.

Because YouTube is all about short videos, I was tapping into the power of short-burst workouts, which are both highly effective and compatible with a busy life like mine and, I imagine, yours. I had to come up with more and more high-intensity concepts that could be played over and over in a short-form format. Nobody wanted the half-hour blocks of workout shows that used to be shown on TV. Those shows had all vanished from the airwaves.

Because we didn’t have much money and traveled around so much, weights and a gym were luxuries, not essentials. I crafted body weight workouts using the full body, which are now practiced and preached on mainstream websites and in magazines.

These are the principles I’ve built my brand around, and now I’m pleased to use them in my very first book. 15 Minutes to Fit follows the same pattern as my videos. As you’ll see in the pages to come, I provide a 30-day workout and nutrition plan that you can execute in a series of short-form set pieces that can be read and applied in 15 minutes, just like my YouTube workouts. In that sense, the book echoes my video workouts, but with a twist. Each 15-minute video workout is self-contained but ultimately is a limited fitness experience. Whereas the YouTube videos were individual workouts without any broader context, the book is a focused program that also encompasses nutrition. To that end, my book integrates multiple workouts, recipes, and motivational tips into a plan that can be followed from start to finish for awesome results.

The 15-minute limit applies to everything in this book. Everyone wants information fast and quick these days. Tweets cannot be longer than 140 characters. Vines can’t exceed 6.5 seconds. Snapchats vanish nearly the instant they’re viewed. And while 15 Minutes to Fit gives you that same sense of immediacy by timing every element in the book, it will stay with you anywhere you go.

“Fifteen minutes to fit” may sound like some cheesy marketing slogan, but my program is based on science, and when you give it your all and push yourself to the limit each and every workout, as I do, you’ll see incredible results. The workouts in 15 Minutes to Fit consist of body weight exercises done in rapid-fire succession for as many rounds as possible until 15 challenging minutes of work have been completed. These short, high-intensity workouts jack up your heart rate and send your metabolic machinery into overdrive. They provide what repetitive crunches won’t: visible abs, a round and tight butt, and toned arms. And, by the way, crunches will develop your abs but they won’t make them visible—that’s one of the big differences between this program and others. Having to regularly blast through existing fatigue thresholds builds power and stamina of the sort that also helps us be strong and capable in our everyday lives. You’ll find that these workouts not only give you plenty of time for all other aspects of your life but also give you additional energy to accomplish more throughout your day.

I follow an innovative format that wraps cardio exercises around other moves. The body is constantly trying to adapt and, therefore, is continuously changing. The exercises by themselves are not complicated, but when they’re arranged in this unique�“wrapping” format, they challenge your mind and change your body. Throughout this book, the workouts keep evolving, with different workouts zeroing in on different problem areas, such as abs and butt.

My 15 Minutes to Fit plan gives you what you need to take control of your body. You will shed pounds and build toned, sexy muscle without having to buy any equipment or even purchase a gym membership. I’ve been showcasing my workouts on YouTube and websites for nearly a decade now, and I’ve honed my approach over that time. I’ve taken all of that self-experimentation and written this fitness book, which takes my approach to a new level. I’m taking the guesswork out of getting ripped.

Every day for an entire month, you’ll know exactly what to do, and you’ll also receive a little pep talk from me. You’ll be working out for 30 days straight, which may seem like a lot, but it’s manageable. Because these workouts require only your body to perform and because they take only 15 minutes, you can work out every day. My program is not like traditional weight training, in which training days need to be separated by rest days. There’s no need to be worried about overdoing it here.

For the workouts to create their magic, you also need to square away your diet. This book will help you in that regard because I provide detailed instructions in later chapters. The goal is for you to learn how to eat right naturally, without making it an obsession.

The workouts will give you a great-looking body and enhanced physical strength as well as inner calm. Challenging workouts are my form of daily meditation, as strange as that sounds. I’ve always had a hard time sitting still and meditating by just focusing on my breath, the way yogis teach. I can’t fathom how people sit motionless thinking of nothing for 10 or 20 minutes at a time. My mind just won’t settle down in that situation. But a funny thing happens during my short, intense workouts: I push all the negative energy out of me by tearing it up during my workout, and then I enjoy the relief that comes after the last rep. I’m so “in the moment” that nothing else occurs to me. That’s the form of meditation I love, and that’s why I can never give up on my fitness. It’s as much mental as it is physical for me. These high-intensity workouts produce the high that comes with the endorphin release associated with being in the zone—let’s call it the “Zuzka Zone.” I’ll show you how to get there throughout the book. I also love the bliss and calmness that come afterward. That’s part of why I train.

I don’t pretend my workouts are easy. Nor do I make them out to be a secret concoction made in some mysterious or magical exercise laboratory. What I do emphasize are efficiency and hard work. By hard work, I don’t mean grueling, backbreaking routines, either. I mean effective, intelligent workout plans that offer visible results.

I train 15 minutes a day, but you may question whether that is realistic for you. Initially, if you can’t sustain 15 minutes of high-intensity training, do it as long as possible, and then finish out your 15 minutes with easier work to encourage endurance. Eventually you will increase the amount of time you can train with high intensity. Let’s say you’re 35 pounds overweight. Chances are that you’re not as fit as I am—not yet, anyway—and initially don’t expect to exercise at the level of intensity that I now sustain for 15 minutes. After even a minute or two, you might be feeling a little winded. You may even feel a bit overwhelmed. That’s fine. Do these workouts at your own level of “high” intensity, and you’ll find you have more stamina with each new workout.

As a beginner, you have an advantage I no longer have. When you first begin working out and eating more healthfully, you may lose quite a bit of weight fairly quickly—more than I could lose even if I wanted to. Eventually, as you get lean and fit and have less fat to burn, the weight loss will slow, and you might find yourself thinking, “Wow, at first I lost weight really fast, but for some reason, I can’t lose the last five pounds.” I asked Ashley A. Herda, PhD, CSCS*D, a lecturer and academic program associate in the Department of Health, Sport, and Exercise Sciences at the University of Kansas (Edwards), why pretty much everyone eventually experiences a slowdown in their progress. “Early on, a lot of the weight lost is going to come from water loss and some fat loss,” she said. “If you are losing weight at first but then the loss is slowing down, you may actually be gaining muscle while losing fat. A study conducted at Syracuse University reported that obese women actually burned more fat during an exercise bout than their nonobese counterparts. The authors concluded that the reduction in fat stores resulted in less fat being available to use as energy.”

In other words, the more fat you lose, the less fat you burn.

So don’t get discouraged when the weight loss slows. On this plan, you’ll constantly adjust your training and diet to reflect that your body is becoming leaner, stronger, more efficient. It takes time. Part of that adaptation is being able to work a lot harder during those 15 minutes than you could previously. “As your training progresses,” says Dr. Herda, “your body becomes a more efficient machine. Every movement is more coordinated by the working muscles, where early on these same muscles were working against one another—a sort of safety mechanism to protect your body from injury. Initially, you would recruit only large muscle groups to complete a movement, but eventually you’ll also call upon smaller muscles you never knew you had to help out with the more complex movements. Fifteen minutes becomes less of a struggle and way more enjoyable, knowing you are benefiting from every single movement.”

The biggest motivation for me at this moment is to create the best workouts I can for people who want to be fitter. I want to do these workouts myself so other people can achieve the level of fitness they want and be happy with how they feel and look. I created this book so that readers will be able to take the philosophy everywhere they go. Armed with these words and images, you’ll be able to succeed without having to rely on anyone or anything else. I’m confident that the 30-day plan in this book works because it worked for me and, more important, because this style of training has worked for thousands of women and men who have followed me for nearly a decade.

The Spark

Nearly every single fitness magazine and product on the market catches our eye with toned abs or a tight butt, laced together with promises on how to achieve such perfection. We look at these images with envy, thinking that these people walk around chiseled 24/7, 365. The magazines make a point not to explain that the image was taken on the day that person was in the best shape of her life, with perfect lighting, and that afterward that image may have been edited to remove any lingering imperfections. It creates an urge to want to have the same body, and the willingness to do whatever it takes sets in. It’s a compelling pitch because we all want a cute butt and small-size jeans. So we gaze at those images, look at ourselves in the mirror, and then start our journey of transforming our body.

This external motivation starts millions on the fitness path, but for the vast majority of those individuals, this path ends in a dead end. The needle on the scale doesn’t move fast enough, that miraculous body doesn’t appear overnight, and they give up. Oftentimes these individuals try and try again, until they finally give up for good. Their mind didn’t fully buy into what their body tried, which happens all too often and not just where working out is concerned.

I believe these people were doomed to fail from the get-go because they were too hung up on appearances, the models’ and their own. What they needed was internal motivation, the sort that comes from within and is validated by changes that don’t always show up in the mirror—changes like a nice glow, more energy, more strength, and a heightened sense of confidence. I have experienced all those benefits firsthand, and it’s why fitness infuses every part of my life and being. Because those benefits propel me to train every day, I now enjoy a shapely butt, a defined midsection, a nice pair of legs that fit comfortably in skinny jeans. Those visuals, however, are a bonus. At this point I’m more addicted to the way my workouts make me feel than I am to the way they make me look. I’m compelled to do them. You couldn’t stop me from working out if you tried.

Exercise offers many immediate benefits, not just physical but mental as well. Training the way I do helps me fight stress and anxiety. I don’t know one person who walks out of a gym, cardio class, or yoga studio after a good workout feeling unhappy or stressed. Tired, maybe, but the sort of tired that accompanies a job well done. Exercise helps send your troubles packing, replacing them with inner calm.

Fitness also offers tremendous long-term benefits. It helps with weight management. It keeps you flexible and graceful. It keeps your heart strong and healthy. It helps keep your bones strong. One of the reasons I work out is that I want to be healthy and strong in the future if and when I have children.

Exercise: The Real Fountain of Youth

Moderate physical activity decreases the risk of cardiovascular disease, stroke, and mortality from all causes, even if the activity starts later in life. A study conducted in Canada, which reported similar findings as the Harvard Alumni Health Study in 1995, recorded the physical activity of 14,365 men and women across their life-span and reported that the more one exercises, the greater one’s life expectancy. Even if they were exercising at only low intensities, their all-cause mortality risk was reduced.

Too often people don’t stick with it long enough to see physical results. That part of the equation takes patience, and patience is something few maintain while trying to achieve a big goal, especially when it involves physical changes. It is almost as though if physical changes haven’t appeared in 20 minutes or less, we assume nothing happened and therefore exercise is no longer worth the effort. However, lack of quick physical changes is not the only cause of failure. Often, the workout plans these people follow are unnecessarily long and dull, and people lose patience with that aspect of fitness too. If they’re working with a personal trainer, they might come to view that person as Satan himself. They dread their workouts and drag themselves through what feels like 60 to 90 minutes of sheer misery. And we wonder why so many people quit.

Finding the Right Reason

If you’ve hated exercising in the past, you’re not alone. In May 2014, I sat in the audience at the Saban Theater in Beverly Hills, watching Jillian Michaels onstage. She’s known across the world for her tenure as one of the tough-love trainers on The Biggest Loser, the beloved and inspirational NBC-TV show. This appearance was part of her “Maximize Your Life” tour, and her lecture—that’s the best way I can describe it—was entertaining and eye opening. It reminded me of the An Inconvenient Truth movement, only rather than addressing climate change, Jillian was talking about the declining state of public health in the United States. Sometimes people refuse to accept the evidence right in front of their face, because it has accumulated slowly enough that the changes are imperceptible. She was explaining what each of us could do to make a difference.

I watched this fitness icon share her wisdom and offer advice on how to diet, exercise, and stay fit. Beyond sets, reps, and calories, she talked about the intangibles that help determine whether someone transforms her body or ends up planted on the sofa eating a bag of Doritos. At one point, this woman whom I have admired for years asked the audience a question: “Who among you actually enjoys working out?” There were three hundred people in the audience, but only three raised their hands.

You may be surprised that so few people felt that way, but I wasn’t. I know, based on my own experience with training others, that many people dislike working out. Even Jillian Michaels, of all people, admitted that she dislikes it. “Well, great,” you could almost hear people thinking. “If Jillian Michaels can’t stand working out, for crying out loud, what hope do I have?” And yet, nearly every day of her adult life, Jillian puts amazing effort into something she says she dislikes, because it gives her the body and life she wants.

Making Fitness Fun

I was one of three people in attendance who raised a hand in response to Jillian Michaels’s question. You could say I’m one of those few weirdos who actually enjoys physical exercise, but that’s only scratching the surface. I’ve found a fitness formula that turns working out from drudgery into fun, so that the workouts themselves are a form of intrinsic motivation. The program isn’t overwhelming, so you don’t give up before those visible results start appearing.

My workouts are also incredibly efficient, producing the results I want in the time I have, and the resulting benefits provide extrinsic motivation. Sure, there are days when I have a hard time getting my butt up off the couch—or even squeezing a workout between “more important” tasks, like most people do. However, I have come up with enough reasons to overcome scheduling excuses and step out of my own comfort zone. One reason is that I’m going to be training for only 15 minutes, not 90 minutes. Even if I’m having an off day, as long as I dive in and start training, I know I will finish strong and the rest of my goals for that day won’t suffer.

Internal Motivation

When it comes to fitness, it has to be about the payoff of the “high” that comes from training. That is what leads to great physical and performance results. Just trying to avoid feeling fat or unfit isn’t enough. You have to derive pleasure from the workouts you perform and the foods you eat. The pleasure can be external, as per Jillian Michaels, or it can be internal, as it is with me.

I avoid exercise boredom by keeping my workouts short and by structuring them as challenges or competitions. Most of us love to compete or at least compare our results to others. I ask you to perform my workouts as fast as possible within the allotted 15 minutes. It’s about what you accomplish in that time frame. I ask you to post your score and compare yours with that of others. Once you start doing that, you’ll get pumped. You’ll start thinking, “Oh, I can compete now, and I want to do better and really push myself.” I’ve learned that this really helps keep people motivated.

ZGYM, the subscription section of my website, is where the workouts become motivating: when the community gets together and everyone is focused on their performance and beating each other’s scores or being able to do certain new exercises. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard things like “I’ve never tried this exercise before, and I’m going to kill it,” or similar sentiments. That motivates me to keep creating new exercises and combining them into new workouts. People find it motivating and their motivation is contagious, and that provides a feedback loop of good vibes and achievement.

Maybe you’ve struggled with workout motivation, and if you’d been in the audience watching Jillian Michaels, you wouldn’t have raised your hand when she asked if you like to work out. Luckily, you’ve come to the right place. I’m going to give you a guide not only about how to work out and get results but also how to enjoy it. Fitness, motivation, desire, compulsion, and the workout high are one and the same in my world.

Every human was born to exert his or her body; there’s a reason we have those two limbs attached to our hips and two to our shoulders. We were made to move, not sit around on our butts all day. In my experience, the reason people dread going to the gym is that their gym routines have become boring. We weren’t made to pound the treadmill mindlessly for an hour and a half, which must be why many gyms hang TV screens in the cardio area. They might as well hang a sign that says: “You’re going to be really freaking bored doing this, so here, watch this.”

External Motivation

Something else keeps people motivated: physical results! In turn, results lead to positive reinforcement. You start working out. Maybe you’re not always enjoying it, but then suddenly people start looking at you in a different light. Others seem to find you more attractive. You catch your significant other looking at you in a new light, and the realization sends a shiver down your spine. That’s a catalyst to continue upping your game.

This type of motivation is powerful, but the key to success on my plan or any plan is to couple this with internal motivation. It’s impossible to be self-sufficient if you constantly rely on input from others. You never know when external motivation will be unavailable, and you also become susceptible to negative feedback. When you believe in what you’re doing, the external input might give you a nice boost when it’s positive, but it won’t bring you down when it’s negative.

Our external motivation needs to change over the years because we change. When I started out in fitness, my motivation was seeing fit people with beautiful bodies. I wanted to look that good. Today that no longer cuts it for me. I need more. I need to see somebody who embodies dedication by playing a sport at a high level, for example. When I see people playing tennis or skiing, I’m excited and hence motivated by a skill that was built off of being fit. I wrote earlier about those who don’t heed the call when confronted with what others would see as a catalyst. Still others heed the call, only to attempt a transformation and fail. Like a spark that doesn’t light a fire, their effort fizzles.

If You Want to Sleep Better, Exercise!

When you work out, and this can be any type of exercise, you sleep deeper. A study was conducted on college athletes who were monitored while they slept after an afternoon workout, an evening workout, and their off days. The authors reported the greatest amounts of deep (REM) sleep after the afternoon workout and slightly less after the evening workout. The lightest sleep was on the days with no workout or if the workout was too late in the evening, suggesting an overstimulation of the nervous system that prevented relaxation into deep sleep.

Catching the Fitness Bug

When it comes to fitness, we all have to start somewhere. If I had to trace my love affair with fitness back to one moment, it was during the summer of 1997, when I was a 15-year-old girl living in the Czech Republic. I was born and raised in the capital city of Prague. It’s one of Europe’s great cities, steeped in history and teeming with beautiful architecture and people. One day I went with a group of friends to a showing of G.I. Jane, a movie starring Demi Moore. We wanted to kill some time and escape the outside world for a couple hours.

Once Demi Moore appeared on screen as Lieutenant Jordan O’Neill, I was transfixed. This character personified beauty, strength, and power. Her physique, short hair, and attitude symbolized her ability to kick ass, and this sent my imagination into overdrive. As the movie continued, I loved seeing her become super-strong and compete with the guys. By the time my friends and I left the theater, I wanted to become Lieutenant Jordan O’Neill, even if I didn’t know if I could attain that status. But that movie gave me two things I didn’t have when I entered the theater: a goal and a role model.

Easy to read and packed with inspiration!

I was impressed with Zuzka's book! Now I can't wait to see what else she will release. I've tried other personal trainers' at home workouts but she really stood out from the rest. She makes me care about exercising and eating right. I've stumbled across her BodyRock videos and have become a fan! Zuzka tailors it to the females but of course males can use this book too.

I appreciate how she included her personal struggles in her book which is inspiring and satisfied my curiosity about Zuzka's past. Due to me taking a long break after having a child, I liked how the book catered to beginners (also great for the experienced). I bought the kindle version and was leery on how the images would show up, but was surprised they were easy to view. Most have at least 3 images per workout to make sure you're following proper form.

One of my favorite sections of the book is chapters 6 & 7. All about how to fuel yourself. I would overwhelm myself on too much information on what to eat. These chapters helped me realize I don't need to buy into any certain brands and that counting calories isn't always necessary. It has a DIY feel to it which makes healthy eating accessible to everyone.

Zuzka gives and gives! I mean it! She has several videos on YouTube that are free, regularly updates her site and talks to her fans. So why not buy the book to show your appreciation?

I've been following Zuzka for around 5 years. She has always been such an inspiration - tough women with a big heart, helping us get fit. My only problem has been that I would end up watching her videos rather than exercise according to them.
I have always been fit and strong so I didn't have to care too much about my figure. This has changed once I moved to America - in my eyes, I became so fat, the bad food that you get here (GMO & sugary) made me feel so sluggish. I piled on around 25 lbs. I wouldn't stick to a program for long enough.
When I saw Zuzka's book, it reminded me of those times, not too long ago, when I was happy with my life and the way I looked. I ordered and it has been the best decision ever.
Now, I have read health books and magazines but this one is so different. I love how Zuzka simplifies the concepts that are so hard to understand from other sources. Her explanations are so easy! I love it and actually remember what she said. Reading the book has been an insane pleasure.
She also has great sense of humor. Some of the things she says in the book made me laugh so hard!
"I'm sure products like Top Ramen and Twinkies have a half-life that rivals that of radioactive waste."
(Talking about drinking water) "the human body is made mostly of water .... Not soda".
These are just some highlights.
This book really made me wanna exercise. I always think about the fact that it really is just 15 minutes. First 5 go OK, another 5 I'm dying, last 5 I'm telling myself to push as it's almost over. I noticed changes the very next day in my mood and my belly seemed to shrink a little. In a week I could tell the difference and now after more than 2 weeks I'm starting to like the way I look again. I don't do these exercises every day but I decided to be active every day as Zuzka proposes. I do some dancing workouts, biking, running and it works.
I am so excited to see what will happen when I'm done. It's a 30 day program but as I stick other activities in between, it will probably take me around 45 days.
When I started exercising, it was so overwhelming and I got tired so fast, my heart would beat rapidly. It still is a lot of effort but I feel greater ease with some exercises. I feel how my fitness level is coming back to normal. I love that! I'm young and want to feel young!
Every day of the exercise, there is a nice inspirational thing Zuzka tells you. I love that, it keeps me going and pushing.
Recipes: I've never cooked according to books. This is the first time and why? Because this is the first time that the recipes look so delicious. I tried a few and I love them. My favorite so far is cauliflower, quinoa and chicken with an awesome dressing! It's mostly those wonderful dressings that make her foods taste so good! I love it. I love that I'm trying to use new ingredients that I haven't heard of before and I'm excited to try more meals in the future. I love how Zuzka divides the meals into those you can eat anytime and those that are workout earned. It actually forced me to exercise once when I wasn't in the mood because I wanted to try that food so badly.
Conclusion: if you are serious about losing weight, if you've been sitting on the couch for too long now and are tired of being tired with life, go and get this book. It WILL HELP YOU!!!! :-) don't be afraid when you are drained after your first workout. I promise it will get better during the week! :-) the workouts are only 15 minutes, you can do them, you will end up loving them, you will end up loving yourself (2 weeks in and I actually feel it!!!!), you will be proud of yourself after every single workout and every single meal that you made.
