Dunt has taken the extraordinary step of asking a set of experts what they think about matters of law.

This is one of the few books of the set to face forwards rather than backwards and it is all the better for that. I learnt a lot, which I find often happens when I have the humility to listen to experts.

Whatever your position during the referendum, you ought to read Dunt because he is willing to face uncomfortable facts. The only country in the world with absolute sovereignty is North Korea. Everyone else must make compromises. The only question for us is how bad a compromise we must endure.

...As for all the favours the right expects the US and Australia to give us, Dunt imagines, perfectly plausibly, the reality will be US trade officials telling our hastily assembled team of novice trade negotiators:

A Useful Reminder of the path Brexit can take.

It is likely in the so called echo chambers that selectively this book would be both widely toasted or roundly scorned. And that's where this book must live as a warning or a guide. As call to sense and not just a post truth fantasy. Use reason as you seek knowledge and not meaningless phrases that brexit means.

A short essay on trench raiding in WW1

When I purchased this I did not realise how short it was.This was my first Kindle purchase.It really is a quite short essay based on secondary sources & unfortunately lacking in depth & details.It would have been good to have first person accounts of trench raids & the German response.There are no illustrations of trench raiding weapons or for that matter anything else.The author concludes that trench raids were ultimately not worthwhile but fails to provide cogent evidence to substantiate his view.Certainly both sides did trench raids right to the end of the war & there was a perceived need to dominate the battlefield.It is an easy read which took me only a couple of minutes but ultimately I found this work unsatisfying.

A pretty good read. Factual, personal, bloody, but, not overly gory. I doubt I would have been able to do these missions and I survived quite a bit of combat in Vietnam. These were some very tough hombres and braver than badgers.

About the Author

After completing her undergraduate training at Nottingham University Medical School, Julia Smedley subsequently spent several years in hospital medical specialties before embarking on higher specialist training in occupational medicine (a joint clinical/academic post at Southampton University Hospitals NHS Trust and the Medical Research Council Environmental Epidemiology Unit, University of Southampton). She is currently the head of a large NHS occupational health department that also provides services to a range of local and global industries. Whilst she is primarily a practical clinician and service director, she has always maintained a strong interest in research and evidence-based practice in occupational medicine.


Finlay Dick is a Senior Lecturer in Occupational Medicine at Aberdeen University, Honorary Consultant Occupational Physician to NHS Grampian and is the course co-ordinator for the MSc in Occupational Medicine at the University of Aberdeen. He has worked in occupational medicine for 15 years in a number of sectors including the oil industry, shipping, local authority, and healthcare sectors.


Steve Sadhra has published over 50 book chapters, international reports and peer-reviewed publications in the field of Occupational Health. He has over 15 years experience in teaching occupational physicians, nurses and occupational hygienists and engineers and currently undertakes National and International Consultancy work in occupational health for over 30 organisations throughout the UK.

I've just got this book. Complete topic that include any occupational medicine aspects. But it served in brief, so it's recommended as an Reminder for expert/profesionals or as a First-Guidance for starter who interest in occupational medicine. Recommended book.... !

The Hangman is a special book...

...written as a novella for "emerging adult readers" as part of a Canadian literacy project. It is written at Grade 3 level intentionally, and is not part of the ongoing series of Inspector Gamache/Three Pines novels. When reviewing the book, please keep this in mind. Works for adult learners and all short story fans

As Karen says in her review, this book is part of Good Reads. Since that is listed with the title and I was not familiar with it, I looked it up before I bought the book. It is a great program for adults learning to read to have access to books by top Canadian authors. So, the book is purposely at a different reading level than the other Three Pines Mysteries. And, as the file size indicates, compared to her other books, it is a short story. All that said, it is a great stand-alone short story! It is well-written and satisfying. For an author who usually writes for a different audience, it must be very difficult to adjust the reading skill level. Louise Penny shows her talent again by pulling it off and creating a gem that works for lots of different readers.

Louise Penny never deceives me

One more time I was wrong. The killer was someone else. But that's not the most important part of Penny's stories. It's the emotional and psychological world she puts us in. I sometimes wish I were in that little town and shared the lives the characters live. It's written with love. Even the bad guys are good people that had unsolved anger issues that push them to do the unacceptable. In this case the man hanged wouldn't have been a murderer if justice hadn't been done years before. And Gamache, as always, sees beyond the obvious... A very good read.

Great Reference, Great Read, Great Recipes. Buy it Now.

`Mediterranean Seafood' and `North Atlantic Seafood', both by noted culinary writer Alan Davidson, the author of `The Oxford Companion to Food' are reference books which a serious cook must have in their library where time is spent deciding on what to eat rather than time spend actually cooking. These books belong to a rare breed of books in English such as Elizabeth Schneider's `Vegetables from Amaranth to Zucchini' or `Bruce Cost's Asian Ingredients' which thoroughly cover a broad single subject or the `Larousse Gastronomique' which gives an overview of virtually every culinary subject, at least from the point of view of French cuisine.

Both books are organized in the same way that gives primacy to information on the aquatic species and secondary coverage of recipes.

Biological family, genus, and species organize the first part on the catalog of species in order that the biological similarity of the fishes is clearly shown. Each article gives the most common English name, the two part Latin scientific name, the scientist who assigned this name (most commonly the great inventor of biological Taxonomy, Linnaeus), the biological family name, and the common name of the fish in virtually every language of the major fishing nationality bordering the relevant body of water. The North Atlantic species, for example, are named in Portuguese, Spanish, French, Dutch, German, Polish, Swedish, Norwegian, Danish, and others such as Gaelic (Irish). The Mediterranean species' names are given in French, Spanish, Greek, Italian, Tunisian, Turkish, and others such as Bulgarian, Romanian, and Russian if, for example, the species is most commonly found in the Black Sea, which is included in the coverage of the Mediterranean. These names in themselves are entertaining to the linguistically inclined, as it is interesting to see the similarities and differences from country to country. For example, even though the Turks came to Asia Minor from central Asia, most of their names for fishes are very similar to the Greek name, making a lot of sense, as a traveling people is likely to name things new to them based on the names given by the indigenous population. The articles on every species also have a highly detailed black and white drawing of each animal. The great value to these is that it makes comparing the appearance of different fishes very easy, as every species is depicted in a similar style. It is too bad they could not be depicted to scale, but this would have had the sturgeon filling two pages while the anchovies would be the size of a period. Instead, the remarks on each fish give the average market length and a description of the typical color and markings.

The catalog entry also gives a paragraph or two on cuisine, which is a discussion of the culinary desirability of the species and typical ways in which the animal is prepared. For most fish, this includes methods by which the fish is butchered. The catalog entries also include a list of recipes and page numbers for these recipes in the second major section of the book.

The second major section divides recipes by country. The Mediterranean volume has chapters of recipes from Spain, France, Italy, Greece, Turkey, the Black Sea, and Northern Africa. The North Atlantic volume has recipes from Portugal, Spain, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, Poland, Russia, Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Iceland, Canada, the United States, Scotland, England, Ireland, and Wales. France merits two sections, covering the southwest and the northwest. The US merits four sections, covering New England, the Middle Atlantic States, the Chesapeake, and the Carolinas and Georgia.

Other books, such as `Fish' by Shirley King seems to have copied this scheme, but seems to be much less successful in that not enough valuable information is packed into the catalogue to make it interesting enough reading to outweigh the annoyance of doing a two step search for a recipe on haddock, for example. The other side of the coin is that if you live in Maryland, you are much more likely to be interested in recipes from the Chesapeake than in recipes from Maine.

One is tempted to expect these recipes to be very generic and not as interesting as those you may find in books of `haute cuisine' from a fish specialist such as Eric Rippert. This is partially true. Davidson is less the great cook than he is a great writer on food. This means that while his recipes may come from common sources, he gives us much more information on the background of the recipes than the chef may do. Two perfect examples of this case are the recipes for bouillabaisse (French fish stew) and Maryland crab cakes. Davidson confesses to giving us something simpler than the `de luxe version', yet this simple treatment is entirely appropriate to the simple origins of the dish, before the gourmets got their hands on it. Similarly, the crab cake recipe has very few ingredients, mostly just crabmeat, seasonings, breadcrumbs, and enough egg to hold it all together.

The supplementary information tells much about the fish cuisine of both regions. The most interesting information is on the fact that while the Mediterranean is very shallow, it has relatively little continental shelf while the North Sea is practically all shelf, suitable to the spawning of young fish in shallow water. This does much to explain the popularity of the North Atlantic cod in peninsular Italy, virtually surrounded by water.

The bibliography shows that the author has based most of his material on local sources in native languages such as Polish, Turkish, and Portuguese. This may only help the multilingual scholar, but then it is the rare English culinary work that does this. One of the greatest things about these volumes is that all of this great material is available in trade paperbacks, which list for no more than $25.

As in his Atlantic Seafood, each animal's entry includes an old engraving (better than a photo for identification -- except for color), its scientific and common names in various languages, a description of the animals habit's and culinary qualities, and a reference to recipes.

That is, it's very easy to find recipes for mackerel or recipes from Italy, but it's hard to find all the baked-fish recipes suitable for a dark-fleshed fish.
A great book like this should never be out of print! It's one of my favorite gifts for friends in Greece and Italy....

A must-have classic

Just before his untimely death, this year, Alan Davidson received the highly prestigious Erasmus Prize for European culture, for his publications on food. This book, along with his Companion and other publications, is a classic. It is crammed full of useful and necessary information. The fish section describes a species, its latin name, and the names in various other languages in the region. The recipe section deals in an intelligent way with regional knowns and unknowns, such as a sencible discussion on bouillabaisse. Any serious library of cookbooks has to have Davidson's books, including this one.

About the Author
Robert Lawson (1892-1957) received his art training at the New York School of Fine and Applied Arts. His favorite medium, pen and ink, is used expressively and with detail in his black and white illustrations in�The Story of Ferdinand (by Munro Leaf). In addition to illustrating many children's books, including�Mr. Popper's Penguins, Robert Lawson also wrote and illustrated a number of his own books for children. In 1940, he was awarded the Caldecott Medal for his picture book illustrations in�They Were Strong and Good�and in 1944, he was awarded the Newbery Medal for his middle grade novel�Rabbit Hill.

A "Children's" book through my tears.

I was born in '44 and my mother read this book to me time and again while showing me the drawings. I later endeavoured to read it myself. The book is not racist! It is an accurate depiction of the way things were and it tells, and tells well. the stories of the lives of the people in the book. It tells of the warmth of the love they had for each other, but without saying so. It tells of the fineness of character and the nobility of honor that they possessed, but, again, without saying so. It is a book that at age fifty seven I cannot read without weeping nor without feeling intense pride and admiration for all those in the stories. The stories awakened in me a curiosity and reverence for the stories of the lives of my own ancestors.....and I hope it does the same for each of you. What they went through! What suffering and privation! And how well they lived their lives. It is a book to give each of us pause to think and consider and reflect on the entire business of living our lives and on what standards of life and morals and principles we should chose to live by. But, simply put, it is a book of stories about ancestors and stories of what they did and stories of how they lived their lives and who they knew and how those they knew lived too. And from those simple stories may be learned the most important lessons in life. Thank you and I hope you come to love They Were Strong and Good as I do. It may be sold as a "children's" book but it should be in the library, and in the heart, of every adult.

Let's Here It for Honoring Some Forefathers!

We all have special people in our pasts, and it's delightful to see Robert Lawson share about his. Lawson's family is depicted with clever prose and his beautiful black-and-white illustrations. His reminiscence made me eager to look into my family tree for my own version of "Strong and Good."
In an age of p.c. history, it's refreshing to listen to Lawson share HIS story, whether we are pleased with all the characterizations, or not. Whitewashing history to pacify is not history, it's a tragic rinsing of what the world was like in the past. When I saw the review of this book claiming it was a racist stomach-churner, I decided to read it myself. Don't let someone else censor your child's understanding of history. (By the way, some of my ancestors were loggers and circuit-riding preachers. Lawson desribes them as a noisy bunch of obnoxious fellows. Am I offended? Not really.) Let's celebrate our histories, whatever they may be.

A piece of Americana

People have to remember the book was published in 1940. The language and ideas are typical of that era. To say it is racist, or to say that it shouldn't be republished is to deny the nations history. I feel the book is a powerful teaching tool for young people to illustrate how America has changed and how far we have come. People who do not appreciate the book have their eyes shut to history.

Patience

I had just purchased a Ipad, and decided to look at some ibooks. The first book His Robot Girlfriend was free. I was very drawn into the story and liked it so much that I purchased the second book His Robot Wife, and as with the first book, I could not put it down. Now some people are harsh in judging this author, but in my opinion, his book is not bad at all. If your looking for a book about Robots/Machines taking over the world. Sorry these are not the books for you. I am so burned out on Matrix, Terminator, Judgment day, type stories. These two books were a breath of fresh air for a change. I hope there will be a third book. So if you have a Kindle or an Ipad give these two books a look.

Looking forward to more of Patience and Mike

His Robot Wife picks up a few years after Mike purchased his humanoid robot Patience and married her in the only state that allows robot/human unions. The first story also revealed that some of the Amonte series robots have free will allowing them to disobey their programming under certain circumstances. In this novella, Patience's behavior is becoming more human-like and independent. Suddenly, the Daffodil Corporation is insisting that Patience upgrade to the latest version of the bio software, claiming that her odd behavior is a known glitch in older model Amontes and that the upgrade will "fix" her. For some reason, Patience is refusing the upgrade. Adding to the couple's troubles, California is about to vote on a referendum which would revoke the state's recognition of robot/human marriages.

Once again, author Wesley Allison uses a "slice of life style" in which seemingly not much happens. Actually, quite a bit does. Mike's view of Patience: sometimes he considers her a sentient being that he loved enough to marry and at other times she is just a super sex doll to him. Society is having trouble dealing with the concept of humans having relationships with machines; with some people accepting it as they would gay or interracial marriage while others consider the idea an abomination. The world Mike and Patience inhabit is not very different from our own, with the exception of the humanoid robots and some other gadgets. Tablets have replaced desktop and laptop PCs and all cars seem to be hydrogen fueled. Global warming has gotten much worse, but otherwise, the politics and motivations of humans is pretty much the same. This time around, the author has toned down his enthusiasm for describing Patience's never ending supply of fetish/slut wear!

I enjoyed this book. Be warned that it is a novella and is a quick read. The Prop 22 issue is resolved too quickly as is the problem of the Daffodil Corporation's software updates. Or are they? Looking forward to the next book.

Tangible fantasy

A fun fantasy. A return to the climate changed, robot-filled near future California of previous titles. The domestic sex robots are (of course) dangerously strong, as is assumed for the genre. The author's slice of life style shines in this piece, as the plucky housewife bot takes on a protege and goes on a cruise to temperate Antarctica. The nearness of this future and the domestic approach taken by the author seems to make the fantasy of perfect robot companions more tangible. Yet not every robot is perfect; their flaws take a surprisingly human turn.

Not to be missed SF classic

It sounds like a story you've heard before: great alien masters descend on Earth and take control of the world, ushering in a golden age that may be cleverly disguised creative slavery. But Clarke's legendary novel (equal to _Rendezvous with Rama_ and _2001: A Space Odyssey_ in fame) isn't about a human rebellion against alien overlords, but the evolution of humanity into its next stage, and the ultimate dwarfing power of the unknowable order of the cosmos. The narrative glides between different characters and different eons, occasionally with a seeming clumsiness that turns out to be purposeful plotting devices. The pay-off is sublime science-fiction poetry that shows the genre's power to transcend human drama and fly into the infinite. The sheer scope of its conclusions leaves the reader wiser and sadder, the sign of a superb novel.

Profound statement on humanity's role in the Universe

Author Arthur Charles Clarke is renowned as one of the greatest science fiction writers of all time. His "2001: A Space Odyssey", written with and filmed by Stanley Kubrick, is viewed as one of the seminal works in science fiction history. Obviously, Clarke didn't make his career out of one single book (and movie). He has been quite a prodigious, and proficient, writer. In addition to writing three sequels to the "2001" saga, he also wrote the best-selling "Rama" series, numerous single novels like "Hammer of God" and "Songs of Distant Earth", and untold numbers of short stories. His stories have won just about every conceivable award for this genre and have achieved the dual goal of garnering critical praise and popular approval. Of all his novels, though, it may be one of his earliest that still stands as his best.

"Childhood's End" was first published in 1953, a time when the cold war was in full form and people were beginning to truly look towards the stars for other life and possibilities for exploration. "Childhood's End" tapped into that fertile imagination to craft a story of profound scale and meaning. It begins one day when numerous spaceships suddenly appear in the sky above Earth. They are flown by an alien species referred to as the Overlords. The purpose of their journey to third planet of the Solar System is subject to much speculation and fear. These aliens seem to be a benevolent race that only wants to help humanity solve the problems that plague it. In fifty years, these Overlords will end ignorance, poverty, war, and disease. To what end do they do this, though? The absence of any obstacles and struggles renders humanity complacent and inert. Is this designed to make Earth pliable for invasion, or is there a greater, more benevolent purpose behind these actions by the Overlords?

"Childhood's End" is an appropriate title as it references the end of humanity's childhood. The Overlords are on a quest to condition the people of Earth for it's new role in the order of the Universe. Current humanity will not be able to handle what is asked of them, but through the generations they can be evolved to be prepared to take their next step. "Childhood's End", in the space of a mere 224 pages tells the stories of the different steps of this evolution in an episodic manner that is rich in detail and profound in meaning. Clarke is fascinated by the potentials of human destiny. Sometimes, as with "Light of Other Days", he is not as successful in realizing that destiny as he is in other stories. "Childhood's End", though, extraordinarily realizes what humanity can become and its importance to strive towards that. "Childhood's End" is as relevant and compelling and novel in 2003 as it was in 1953.

great science fiction

I was strictly a dabbler in science fiction, until this book grabbed me and pulled me in. To this day, it ranks as my favourite in the genre.
The Overlords appear one day over every city on Earth, and with little resistance, mankind submits to the technologically superior race. After all, their demands are entirely benevolent; they seem to want no more than to end war, poverty, and the other evils that have always plagued the Earth. But why? Through three generations, a few people endeavour to find out.
What they finally learn is something they never imagined: mankind's terrible and wonderful final destiny, and the part the mysterious Overlords are fated to play in achieving it.
Many of Clarke's novels are somewhat lacking in character development, and though Childhood's End is not an extreme example of this tendency, some fairly important characters are only half-formed. In some books, this is a flaw, but when Clarke is truly in his element, the vagueness of the characters seems to work in the story's favour. Here, particularly, I found myself getting quite attached to characters it seemed I barely knew (including some of the enigmatic aliens).
One feature I particularly liked in this book was the glimpse of the Overlords' home world, a tour of wonders that Clarke knows better than to try and explain in terms of known science, at least not with any detail. If anything, the mystery of it all makes the story-- and the Overlords-- seem more real.
The ending, though inspiring from a certain angle, can be a downer in terms of the characters you come to know and like, no matter where your sympthies end up lying. Mine, in the end, fall with Karellen, the Overlord supervisor, who, like the other Overlord characters, manages to be thoroughly believable despite the fact that his background and motivations remain more or less a mystery.
Science fiction is often infused with philosophy; this book pulls off the mixture better than any other I've read.
