Pop psychology at its worst

After a superficial introduction to the concept of emotional intelligence, the author shifts his focus to personality tests, never to return to his original thesis. In fact, emotional intelligence is more of an aptitude than a trait, but that doesn't stop Carter from laying out 22 tests of personality traits, ranging across extraversion, laterality, thrift, toughmindedness, etc. Few of these have anything to do with emotional intelligence, and they betray a book that was most likely written under another title and then repackaged. The icing on the cake is that the tests aren't only off topic, they aren't even very good.

The field of applied superconductivity has been transformed since the first edition by new materials and fabrication techniques, and by innovative device and circuit concepts. In this new edition, two leading experts provide an up-to-date guide to the theory and practice of applied superconductivity.

Preface to the Second Edition
Several exciting major developments have changed the field of applied superconductivity since 1981, when the first edition of this text was published. New materials and fabrication methods and innovative device and circuit concepts have made profound changes in the way we practice in this field. The most public of the changes was the discovery in 1986 of high-temperature oxide superconductors, several of which quickly were shown to have transition temperatures above the boiling point of nitrogen. Equally important but less publicly obvious was a pair of key innovations in the fabrication of superconductive integrated circuits. A way of making high quality, durable niobium tunnel junctions and a procedure to avoid any processing steps intervening in the fabrication of the junctions, has led to stable, well controlled integrated circuits. New concepts in superconductive detectors and mixers has made superconductivity the technology of choice in millimeter wave radio astronomy. And in the digital field, innovative ideas for single flux quantum logic and for hybridization with semiconductor devices have brought new opportunities. To date, the high-temperature superconductors have had their major impacts in magnetometers and microwave receivers. The greatly reduced refrigerator burden when using these materials compared with the metal superconductors has stimulated very extensive research on making cables for extremely high field magnets, and optimism for use in power systems.

The basic theory of superconductivity we presented in the 1981 edition is still very useful. There is, as yet, no accepted theory of electron pairing in the high-temperature superconductors and much of the practical work, including that on high-temperature superconductors, still relies on the theories in this book. Phenomenological theories have been developed to explain the behavior of high-temperature superconductors. And the low-temperature metallic superconductors continue to be of major importance, not least because of the success of Nb-Ti alloy in MRI magnets, by far the largest commercial market for superconductors. The low-temperature superconductor wire technology has matured over the past two decades and continues to make impressive progress. On the other hand, the fast pace of development of the physics and technology of the high-temperature superconductors presents us with a difficult choice. We have chosen to present a practical view of the current position, but freely admit that new results in this rapidly changing field may lead to a complete reappraisal.

Between us two co-authors, we have had several decades of experience with applications of superconductivity, both in the university and in industry. We have attempted to infuse the presentations, particularly of the electronics part, with our practical views that we hope will be helpful to the readers.

We thank several colleagues in the field including John Clarke, James Lukens, V. K. Kaplunenko, William McGrath, Oleg Mukhanov, Paul Richards, Andrew Smith, Stephen Whiteley, Yongming Zhang, who were very helpful with suggestions on sections in their areas of special expertise and in providing valuable data. Excellent textbook on superconducting electronics

This book starts from the basic physics of superconductivity and deals with superconducting devices, such as SQUIDs, SIS mixers and Single Flux Quantum devices. The treatments of each device are based on the current research, so that readers easily get the front of the fields. It also includes a prenty of important papers as the references and thus you can easily get into the deep level. I found one disadvantage that there is no statements on single electron/Cooper pair tunneling phenomena. I recommend this book for the persons to study superconducting electronics from students to the experts in this field. This book is valuable even for the persons who read the first editon because each treatments are updated.

After seen "THE SECRET" some years ago and being aware of how things work in the real world, I found this book that I though would bring something important, but didn't
As I started reading and discovering that all written in this book is just another propagandistic story to keep you dreaming and longing for something that doesn't exist.
Why this guy doesn't tell you that no matter how good, how talented, how many and great ideas you might have; if you don't have the money and the "connections" to thrive, you won't get anywhere!
The world is something different from what we've been told by the establishment.
I can tell you how magnificent and outstanding you are, how special and how talented you're been created; the world works in a different level; just to publish a book it's such an impossible task! Publishing companies will slam the door at you without even hearing about your ideas, agents won't even give you the time to read your story.
You need to be connected! Mean while there is lots of hungry wolfs ready to take your money and promise you something you will never see.
That's what this......writer should warn you about. To dream ? Yes, probably but more important, is to be realistic and understand that. But mean while this gentleman has written his "make you feel good" book and collect his money, mercilessly!
Sorry this is my opinion and I stand by it. I have read hundreds of books like this and all I can tell you is, THE WORLD DOESN'T WORK THAT WAY. THE REALITY IS COMPLETELY DIFFERENT. For those delusional souls who want a bandaid to heal the problem with empty words and unreal dreams, well here is this book. Good luck with your future.

Each part of the book discusses how a particular genre of literature has been "recast" into film. The individual chapters focus on comparisons and close studies of individual films or film songs inspired by "classics" of literature. About the Author

Heidi Pauwels is Associate Professor in the Department of Asian Languages and Literature at the University of Washington in Seattle. She teaches both Modern and Old Hindi language and literature, and courses on Hinduism. Her publications include two monographs on sixteenth-century bhakti: Krsna's round dance reconsidered: Hariram Vyas's Hindi Ras-pancadhyayi (1996) and In praise of holy men: Hagiographic poems by and about Hariram Vyas (2002) and various articles in scholarly journals and conference proceedings, including comparisons of medieval and contemporary film and television retellings of the stories of Krishna and Rama.

PHILIPPE JORION is Professor of Finance at the School of Business at the University of California at Irvine. Dr. Jorion has written the first five editions of Financial Risk Manager Handbook (Wiley), as well as Financial Risk Management: Domestic and International Dimensions; Big Bets Gone Bad: Derivatives and Bankruptcy in Orange County; and Value at Risk: The New Benchmark for Managing Financial Risk. He is also a Managing Director in the Risk Management Group at Pacific Alternative Asset Management Company (PAAMCO), a global fund of hedge funds.

Don't buy this book

Unless you want to learn wrong concepts don't buy this book. Spent money on this and now after finding so many errors I stop trusting this book completely. And the errors are found even in very basic concepts like Kurtosis, CI for Chi-Square distributions. If you want to prepare for FRM exams go with Kaplan Schweser or Bionic Turtle. At least there you will be able to learn the correct concepts.

The kindle version of this book looks fine, but there is not access code for test bank. the publisher said either buy e-version from their website or no code, even they provide link to amazon.

I bought this product to help me to understand this topic.
This book is complete and also had practice sets.
However, some people would prefer concise book to prepare for their frm test.
For me, I just bought it as one time investment instead buying some concise books about risk.

When I was a school student I was always studying hard but the results were never in line with my expectations. 'Gavrielides and Artinopoulou propose a reconstructed philosophy of restorative justice that is much more expansive and inclusive, much less either/or, than the usual approach. For the restorative justice movement to progress, they argue, we first must reconcile the internal tensions identified by the authors in this volume: conceptual, philosophical, political, personal. Their proposed reconstructed philosophy helps point a direction but in addition, they also suggest some rules for moving in this direction, asking those of us working in and advocating for restorative justice to redirect some of our energies. The methodology the editors adopted for this volume is also significant. Instead of limiting contributions to empirical analysis, they encouraged authors to write freely from a variety of sources and perspectives. About the Author
Theo Gavrielides is an international expert in restorative justice, human rights and criminal justice and an advisor and project manager for EU and international programmes. He is the Founder and Director of The IARS International Institute and the Founder and co-Director of the Restorative Justice for All Institute (RJ4All). He is also an Adjunct Professor at the School of Criminology (Centre for Restorative Justice) of Simon Fraser University as well as a Visiting Professor at Buckinghamshire New University. Professor Gavrielides is the Editor-in-Chief of the peer-reviewed International Journal of Human Rights in Healthcare, as well as of the Youth Voice Journal and the Internet Journal of Restorative Justice. He has published extensively in the areas of restorative justice, human rights, youth justice, equality and criminal justice. Previously, he was the Chief Executive of Race on the Agenda, as well as the Human Rights Advisor of the UK Ministry of Justice.
