About the Author
ASANGA was a fourth-century Indian adept and philosopher, author of the foundational works of the Yogācāra school of Buddhist philosophy. ARTEMUS B. ENGLE received a PhD in Buddhist studies from the University of Wisconsin and has studied Tibetan Buddhism for more than forty years. He teaches Tibetan language and Buddhist doctrine at the Mahayana Sutra and Tantra Center in Howell, New Jersey, and has published numerous translations of works by Indian and Tibetan masters. He has been a Tsadra Foundation Fellow since 2005.

An important addition to the world's access to authentic Mahayana doctrine

A very important addition to the world's knowledge of Mahayana Buddhism. A must-have for all aspiring bodhisattvas and buddhas (since the teaching does explain the sutra path to enlightenment). Much kudos to Art Bengle and the Tcadra Foundation for producing this exceptional translation of Arya Asanga's classic epic on the doctrine of the non-duality of great compassion and great emptiness, which is the reality or suchness of all phenomena, which is void yet radiant.

Jones looks back at the lessons he learned on a perilous road to the NFL and provides keen insights on what it takes to succeed on the field and off in The Next Quarter. This encyclopedia, edited by the deputy director of the National Science Foundation's Division of Information and Intelligent Systems, compiles 186 articles on the maturing field of human-computer interaction (HCI). Topics cover applications (e.g., Classrooms, Law enforcement, Telecommuting), computer hardware (Keyboard, Liquid crystal displays, Mouse), fields of study (Ergonomics, Sociology and HCI), methods (Gesture recognition, Icons, Natural-language processing), societal issues (Cybersex, Workforce), and other subjects (Arpanet, Mosaic, Website design).

Article length averages 3-5 pages, with some longer articles, such as the 10-page History of HCI. Many entries are divided with boldface subheadings, enabling users to quickly identify main elements.

Names of article authors appear at the end of each article, usually followed by a list of see also references and a list of additional readings. Readings consist of books, articles, and Internet sites. Figures, tables, and photos are clear and aid understanding. Fifty-eight short sidebar entries provide added perspective within select articles. For example, the article Education in HCI includes a sidebar titled "A Personal Story--Bringing HCI into the 'Real World.'"

Both volumes include an alphabetical list of entries at the front and a set index in the back. Volume 1 also contains a list of sidebars and a list of all articles arranged under 10 general categories. The largest category, "Methods," has 35 articles. Appendixes include a combined list of further readings and an annotated list of HCI-related fiction and nonfiction books, works, films, TV and radio programs, and music. A glossary is also included but, at two pages, is perhaps too short.

About the Author
William Sims Bainbridge is deputy director of the Division of Information and Intelligent Systems of the National Science Foundation, after having directed the division's Human Computer Interaction, Universal Access, and Knowledge and Cognitive Systems programs. He has represented the social and behavioral sciences on five advanced technology initiatives: High Performance Computing and Communications, Knowledge and Distributed Intelligence, Digital Libraries, Information Technology Research, and Nanotechnology. Bill is also the author of ten books, four textbook-software packages, and some 150 shorter publications in information science, social science of technology, and the sociology of culture. He earned his doctorate from Harvard University.

Stan Gibilisco has authored or co-authored more than 50 nonfiction books in the fields of electronics, general science, mathematics, and computing. He has worked as a technical writer in industry, as a shortwave radio broadcast station technician, as a radio-frequency design engineer, and as a magazine editor. One of Stan’s books, the Encyclopedia of Electronics (TAB Books, 1985), was named by the American Library Association (ALA) in its list of "Best References of the 1980s." An Excellent Introduction

This book covers all the basics neccessary to get a very basic understanding of electronics and electricity. Providing the neccessary formulas and definitions, this book makes a great study guide, with quizes and tests to help measure your progress. This book is good to have, but not absolutely neccessary because other books might cover the topics here and then delve deeper, but, for someone with no prior knowledge, this book is fairly simple to get through and understand while still teaching you everything you need to know to move ahead.

There are countless excellent electronics books on the market, many targeted towards the beginner, but I believe that none are more suitable than this book for reading from beginning to end. If you take the intention of this book to heart, which is to skim the breadth of analog electronics, then you will find it to be a fun, fun read. Use it to create mental landmarks for your further exploration of specific topics. By no means should you expect to design a circuit just from having read this book, because that is definitely not what it is meant for.

The unfortunate fact is that analog electronics is a vast field, plagued with more apparent mysteries than is the field of digital electronics. For instance, many excellent introductory analog electronics books start with the op-amp and immediately dive into 5 chapters of detailed analysis of different op-amps and their circuits. (E.g. what is the frequency response, how to tweak it for temperature stability, what is the signal-to-noise ratio, etc, etc, etc.) That is what a circuit designer will appreciate, but to an electronics novice, getting a wonderful training in op-amps will not open his/her eyes to how anything fits in the big picture.

That is exactly where this book comes into play. It spends a mere few pages on the op-amp, doesn't try to analyze it hardly at all. You learn how you could possibly use it, and you're on to the next topic. At some point in the future, perhaps you might come across a circuit with an op-amp, you'll at least know what it roughly does, and if you choose, you can get another excellent book that focuses on op-amps to do your own design.

I think the market really needs a book such as this one, and the author has done a great service.

Highly Accessible Information For All Electronics Technicians

Stan Gibilisco's Electronics Demystified 2nd Edition is a great resource for electricians and electronics technicians at all levels of expertise. It brings together a very large amount of information without getting bogged down in too much math. I think just the right balance is achieved. It begins with a discussion of dc and ac circuit fundamentals including phase calculations, and makes it seem easy. I could not find any inaccurate or misleading information, just lots of good solid expertise. This book is an excellent introduction to the field and an excellent review for the more advanced reader.
